Are hard drives supplied with the RackStation RS422+?
No, the drives are sold separately. This is the first thing to budget for: the RS422+ accepts four 3.5" SATA drives or 2.5" SATA SSDs, to be chosen according to the capacity and endurance you need. The NAS arrives ready to take your drives, not filled.
Does the RS422+ fit in a shallow network rack?
Yes: 327.5 mm deep, handles included, in a 1U chassis. It can be mounted in a two-post rack or even on the wall, without an expensive rail kit — which is precisely what sets it apart from a conventional rack server.
What happens if a drive fails in the RS422+?
Work carries on. The NAS supports RAID 1, 5, 6, 10 and SHR, which spread the data so as to survive the loss of one drive — or two drives with RAID 6. You replace the failed unit and the volume rebuilds.
Does the RS422+ need to be shut down to change a drive?
No, the drives are hot-swappable. You pull out the relevant tray and insert the new drive without switching off the machine: shares remain accessible throughout. This is what makes it possible to intervene in the middle of the working day.
What is the ECC memory in the RS422+ for?
To prevent silent file corruption. ECC memory detects and corrects bit errors that ordinary RAM would let through — so a file written to the NAS stays identical to the original. The RS422+ comes with 2 GB of DDR4 ECC.
Can the RS422+ be upgraded to 10 Gigabit?
Yes, by adding the E10G22-T1-Mini module in the dedicated slot. As standard, it has two 1GbE ports that support automatic failover and load balancing — two links are better than one on a busy network.
What speeds does the Synology RS422+ reach?
601 MB/s sequential read and 516 MB/s sequential write. Two separate figures that should be read together: writing always costs more than reading on a RAID-protected volume. The processor is a 2-core AMD Ryzen R1600, 2.6 GHz up to 3.1 GHz.
Can the RS422+ be used as a video surveillance recorder?
Yes, through the Surveillance Station application in the DSM operating system, with support for up to 40 IP cameras. The NAS then becomes a network video recorder, on top of its role as a file and backup server.
Does the RS422+ have M.2 slots for SSD cache?
No, it has no built-in M.2 slot. Acceleration here comes from the network — the 10GbE module — and from the choice of drives, opting for 2.5" SATA SSDs rather than hard drives if random access matters.
Is the RackStation RS422+ noisy in an office?
It is rated at 28.5 dB(A) in operation. That is the level of a quiet office: a 1U rack chassis is still louder than a desktop NAS, but this one can sit alongside workstations without a dedicated server room.
