Frequently asked questions about this product

Are drives included with the RS1226RP+?
No, no drives are included: the 8 bays take 3.5-inch SATA hard drives or 2.5-inch SATA SSDs, chosen according to the capacity you need. Synology lists its HAT3300 and HAT5300 series and its SAT5200 SSDs as compatible. Its two internal M.2 slots also accept SNV3400 or SNV5400 NVMe SSDs for caching.
What does the RS1226RP+ dual power supply change?
The server keeps running if a unit fails or an electrical circuit is cut: its two 550 W units take over from each other. Two power cords are included, ideally plugged into two separate outlets or two separate UPSs. The RS1226+, by contrast, has a single 250 W unit: that is the only substantive difference between the two.
How far can the RS1226RP+ memory be expanded?
Up to 32 GB. It ships with a 4 GB DDR4 ECC SODIMM module and has 2 slots, each taking a 16 GB module (D4ES04-4G, D4ES03-8G or D4ES03-16G from Synology). Memory matters for very large volumes: above 108 TB, a volume requires 32 GB of installed memory.
Can the RS1226RP+ be upgraded to 10 GbE networking?
Yes, by adding a card in its PCIe 3.0 x8 slot (x4 link): 10 GbE with the E10G30-F2, E10G30-T2 or E10G30-T1, or 25 GbE with the E25G30-F2. Out of the box, it offers 2 aggregatable 2.5 GbE RJ-45 ports, to combine throughput or fail over automatically to the second link in case of an outage.
How many drives can the RS1226RP+ handle?
Up to twelve: the 8 front bays and 4 more with an RX426 expansion unit, connected to the USB Type-C expansion port. The two internal M.2 2280 NVMe SSDs, reserved for caching, come on top without taking up a bay. Drives are hot-swappable and a volume grows by adding a drive, without interrupting service.
Which rail kit does the RS1226RP+ need?
The Synology RKS-02 sliding rail kit, sold separately, for a 4-post 19-inch rack. The RS1226RP+ takes up 2U of height for 398.4 mm of depth and weighs 8.9 kg. Sliding rails let you pull the server out of the rack to work on it without removing it or unplugging the units next to it.
Is the RS1226RP+ noisy?
No: it measures 22.8 dB(A) in operation, with two 80 mm fans, a level that lets it stay in an office network cabinet rather than a server room. Its power consumption is 81.82 W in access and drops to 30.58 W when the drives go into hibernation, which also limits the heat given off in the rack.
