Are drives included with the RS1226+?
No, the RS1226+ comes without drives: its 8 bays take either 3.5-inch SATA hard drives or 2.5-inch SATA SSDs. Synology lists its HAT3300 and HAT5300 series drives and its SAT5200 SSDs as compatible. The two internal M.2 slots also take SNV3400 or SNV5400 NVMe SSDs to speed up access.
What is the difference between the RS1226+ and the RS1226RP+?
The power supply: the RS1226RP+ has two redundant 550 W units that take over from each other, the RS1226+ a single 250 W internal unit. The Ryzen V1500B processor, 8 bays, 2 x 2.5 GbE ports and M.2 slots are identical. The RS1226+ is also shallower (306.6 mm versus 398.4 mm) and lighter (6.8 kg versus 8.9 kg).
How far can the RS1226+ memory be expanded?
Up to 32 GB. It comes with a 4 GB DDR4 ECC SODIMM module and has 2 slots, each taking a 16 GB module (Synology part numbers D4ES04-4G, D4ES03-8G and D4ES03-16G). Plan ahead if you are aiming for very large volumes: above 108 TB, a volume requires 32 GB of installed memory.
Can the RS1226+ be upgraded to 10 GbE networking?
Yes, through its PCIe 3.0 x8 slot (x4 link), which takes a 10 GbE card (E10G30-F2, E10G30-T2 or E10G30-T1) or a 25 GbE card (E25G30-F2). Out of the box, it has 2 x 2.5 GbE RJ-45 ports that can be aggregated to combine throughput or fail over automatically to the second link if the first one drops.
How many drives can the RS1226+ handle at most?
Twelve: the 8 front bays, plus 4 bays with an RX426 expansion unit connected to its USB Type-C expansion port. On top of that come two internal M.2 2280 NVMe SSDs dedicated to caching, which take up no bay. Drives are hot-swappable and a volume grows by adding a drive, without shutting the server down.
Is a rail kit needed to install the RS1226+?
Not always: it mounts directly in a 2-post 19-inch rack. In a 4-post rack, a Synology kit sold separately is required, the RKM114 (fixed rails) or the RKS-02 (sliding rails, handy for servicing without removing the unit). It takes up 2U of height for 306.6 mm of depth and weighs 6.8 kg.
Is the RS1226+ suitable for video surveillance?
Yes: with Surveillance Station, it records up to 40 IP cameras in 1080p, and as many in 4K with the H.265 codec. Two camera licences are included; additional ones are bought individually. At the same time, the same server can back up the company's computers and sync files across several sites.
