Are drives included with the RS1626xs+?
No, the RS1626xs+ is sold without drives: its 4 bays accept 3.5-inch SATA hard drives or 2.5-inch SATA SSDs. For this model, Synology lists its Enterprise series HAT5300 drives and its SAT5200 SSDs, as well as SNV3400 or SNV5400 NVMe SSDs for the two internal M.2 slots reserved for caching.
Why choose a 4-bay NAS in a 1U form factor?
To fit an enterprise server into a single rack unit: six-core Xeon, 16 GB ECC, dual 10 GbE and redundant power supply. Filled with SATA SSDs, the 4 bays provide fast storage, and capacity grows to 16 drives by adding an RX1225RP unit as data grows, without changing server.
How far can the RS1626xs+ memory be expanded?
Up to 64 GB: it comes with one 16 GB DDR4 ECC RDIMM module and has 4 slots, each accepting 16 GB (Synology part number D4ER02-16G). Going up to 64 GB unlocks 1 PB volumes in RAID 6; below that, a volume is limited to 200 TB with 32 GB of memory, and to 108 TB with less memory.
Does the RS1626xs+ offer remote management?
Yes, a dedicated out-of-band management network port lets you work on the server even when it is powered off: turn it back on, check its logs, diagnose a fault, without going through the data ports. The two 10 GbE RJ-45 ports thus stay reserved for traffic, and can be aggregated to combine throughput or fail over in case of an outage.
Which rail kit should be used for the RS1626xs+?
The Synology RKS-04 sliding rail kit, sold separately: it is the only one Synology specifies for this model, in a 4-post 19-inch rack. The RS1626xs+ takes up 1U of height but 668.5 mm of depth and weighs 9.5 kg: check that your cabinet accepts this depth before ordering.
Can the RS1626xs+ be placed in an office?
A server room or technical cabinet is better: its four 40 mm fans, needed to cool a Xeon in 1U, bring the noise level to 52.6 dB(A) in operation. It draws 97.59 W in access and 56.19 W with the drives in hibernation, and operates at an ambient temperature between 5 °C and 35 °C.
Can the RS1626xs+ connect over Fibre Channel?
Yes, by adding a Fibre Channel adapter in its PCIe 4.0 x8 slot: the server then presents its LUNs to a SAN storage network. The same slot can take a 25 GbE E25G30-F2 card or a 10 GbE SFP+ card. It handles up to 256 iSCSI targets and 512 LUNs.
