Frequently asked questions about this product

Can the Smart-UPS SC 420 be controlled via USB?
It has a DB-9 RS-232 serial port, and that is what handles automatic shutdown of the computer. On a recent computer without a serial port, you will need a USB-to-serial adapter to use this function.
How many of the four outlets are backed by the battery?
Three. The fourth C13 outlet is surge-protected only and switches off with the mains. Keep the first three for the system unit and the monitor.
What can you plug into a 420 VA unit?
260 W in total: a desktop PC and its monitor, no more. It is this wattage that you should compare with your equipment, never the 420 VA shown in the title.
Over what voltage range does the stabiliser operate?
Between 160 and 286 V, on a frequency detected automatically at 50 or 60 Hz ±3 Hz. As long as the mains stays within it, the battery is not called upon: this is what a line-interactive unit does that an off-line one does not.
What does the UPS show during a power cut?
An illuminated display with four indicators — online, on battery, replace battery, overload — backed by an audible alarm. Enough to know where things stand without any software.
How long does it take to recharge the battery?
3 hours — remarkably fast for this category. It is a sealed, maintenance-free lead-acid battery with suspended electrolyte, the unit's wear part.
How much space does the Smart-UPS SC 420 take up?
119 × 368 × 168 mm and 9.1 kg, in a compact tower format. That is heavy for its size: the weight comes from the lead-acid battery, and it is better placed on the floor than up high.
Is the APC Smart-UPS SC 420 new and under warranty?
Yes, new equipment, with the invoice serving as the warranty document for 2 years. It has four C13 outlets with a C14 input: make sure you have IEC cords for your machines. The datasheet details the rest.
