How many ports does the RG-EG105GW(T) really have, and how are they split?

5 Gigabit RJ45 ports in total: 1 fixed WAN, 1 fixed LAN and 3 switchable LAN/WAN ports. You can therefore set up as many as 4 WAN or as many as 4 LAN, never both at once. A USB 2.0 port rounds out the set; beyond 4 wired devices, you will need to add a switch.

What Internet throughput can this router really handle?

Its forwarding throughput is 600 Mbps: beyond that, the router becomes the bottleneck, not the line. Its 880 MHz processor and 256 MB of memory handle 12,000 concurrent connections and an ARP table of 1,024 entries, which suits a very small business or a busy shop.

Does the VPN keep up with the same throughput as the Internet connection?

No, and the gap is significant: 24 Mbps with IPSec and OpenVPN, versus 140 Mbps with L2TP and PPTP, far below the 600 Mbps of routing. Allow for 8 tunnels per protocol and up to 100 VPN accounts: enough for application access and monitoring between sites, less so for large file transfers.

How many devices can it handle, and how many over Wi-Fi?

Here again, two different figures: 150 recommended network clients in total, and 150 devices managed in router mode, but only 60 concurrent wireless clients on its radios. It is this second figure that matters if all your computers connect over Wi-Fi.

Is this router's Wi-Fi Wi-Fi 6?

No, it is Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac Wave 2), as 802.11ax is not supported: 1,267 Mbps combined, i.e. 867 Mbps on 5 GHz and 400 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, in 2×2 MIMO on each band.

Is the advertised 40 m range realistic?

It is a value measured in the lab, with no obstacles, on both bands: in premises with partition walls, expect noticeably less. The antennas are built into the case (3 dBi on 2.4 GHz, 4 dBi on 5 GHz), and it is Reyee Mesh, enabled at the push of a button, that extends coverage without re-cabling.

What's in the box?

The router, its 12 V / 1.5 A power adapter and a mounting kit with 4 feet. It can lie flat, stand upright or be wall-mounted, and is cooled without a fan — 120 × 120 × 28 mm for 251 g.

Can this router power cameras or access points over PoE?

No, none of its ports supplies PoE. To power IP cameras or access points over the network cable, you need to insert a PoE switch or injectors between the router and the devices. The router itself draws 15 W at most and has ±4 kV surge protection on its ports.

Can I access an on-site NVR or camera remotely?

Yes, even with a dynamic or private IP from the ISP. Free Reyee DDNS, port forwarding (up to 256 rules, with NAT loopback) and Ruijie Cloud let you reach an internal device from outside. So you do not need to subscribe to a static IP to monitor a site.

Can I set up a Wi-Fi access portal for the customers of a café or hotel?

Yes: customisable captive portal, authentication by SMS, by password or in one click, with RADIUS client and proxy. The built-in PPPoE server handles up to 50 accounts, and website filtering and traffic auditing keep usage in check.

What does this router protect the company network against?

Stateful firewall, ACLs (including time-based and IPv6 ACLs), IP-MAC binding, MAC address filtering and WAN/LAN ping blocking. On top of that come dedicated defences against SYN Flood, Smurf, Teardrop, Land and Fraggle attacks and malformed packets, with security logs that can be exported to a log server.

Can it run several Internet connections as backups for one another?

Yes, up to 4 WAN, with automatic failover in case of an outage and load balancing by session, by IP or by actual load. Link detection continuously monitors each connection to trigger failover, and SD-WAN (24 tunnels, 8 sites, 80 Mbps) completes the multi-site setup.

Is this Reyee router new and under warranty?

Yes: the product is new and sealed, supplied with its invoice, which serves as the warranty document for 1 year. Details of the ports, VPN throughputs and security features are given in the manufacturer's datasheet (PDF).
