Does the Mi 4C also work on 5 GHz Wi-Fi?

No. The Mi 4C transmits only on the 2.4 GHz band, in 802.11b/g/n, at up to 300 Mbps theoretical; the 5 GHz band is not supported. The four external 5 dBi antennas therefore serve to extend range on this single band.

Can I make use of a connection faster than 100 Mbps with this router?

Not over a wired connection. The WAN port and the two LAN ports are 10/100 Mbps: wired speed is capped at 100 Mbps whatever the speed of your plan. Wireless, for its part, reaches 300 Mbps theoretical with 802.11n.

How many devices can be connected at the same time?

Up to 64 devices. The dual-core 580 MHz MediaTek MT7628DA processor, the 64 MB of DDR2 RAM and the 16 MB of flash memory are sized for this load. The 2.4 GHz band covers channels 1 to 13, so you can choose a less congested channel in an apartment building.

Is a network cable included in the box?

The box contains the Mi 4C router, its power adapter and the user manual. So you will need an RJ45 cable to connect the WAN port to your ISP's modem-router, and a second one if you want to plug a device into one of the two LAN ports.

Does the router make any noise once installed in the living room?

No. Heat dissipation is natural, with no fan: no noise at all, and a power supply limited to 5 V / 1 A. You can therefore install it in a living room or bedroom without any disturbance.

Can I limit a device's speed or block an intruder from my phone?

Yes. The Mi Wi-Fi app (iOS, Android and web interface) gives access to speed limiting, blacklist or whitelist access control, intrusion detection and automatic optimisation. Parental controls and a guest network are also among the features.

What encryption protects the Mi 4C's Wi-Fi network?

The network is protected with WPA-PSK / WPA2-PSK, complemented by SSID hiding and blacklist or whitelist access control. The system is a customised Mi Wi-Fi ROM based on OpenWrt, which gives access to advanced settings.

Do the 4 antennas rated at 5 dBi really make a difference to range?

They are external and omnidirectional: the signal goes out in all directions rather than being focused. The stated receive sensitivity thresholds range from −85 dBm at 11 Mbps to −66 dBm at HT40 MCS7: the further the device moves away, the lower the negotiated speed, but the link holds.

What should I do if I get the router's configuration wrong?

A Reset button restores the device to its factory settings. The system LED changes colour — orange, blue or purple — to indicate the current status, and a second, blue LED indicates the external interface. Configuration can then be redone in a few steps via the Mi Wi-Fi app.

Is the Xiaomi Mi 4C router new and under warranty?

Yes: it is new and sealed in its original packaging, supplied with its invoice, which serves as the warranty document for 1 year. Full specifications are given in the datasheet (PDF). This is the R4CM model, Xiaomi reference DVB4231GL.
