Which processors does the MSI MAG Z790 TOMAHAWK WIFI accept?
12th- and 13th-generation Intel Core processors, as well as Pentium Gold and Celeron, on the LGA 1700 socket with the Intel Z790 chipset.
How many drives can this motherboard accommodate?
Four M.2 Gen4 x4 SSDs and seven SATA 6 Gbps ports — a rare number of SATA ports, which saves adding a controller card when you stack up storage drives.
Do the M.2 SSDs heat up on this motherboard?
The slots are covered by the M.2 Shield Frozr heatsink, which protects the SSD from overheating and prevents thermal throttling — the drop in transfer rate that occurs after a few minutes of sustained copying.
How much memory does this Z790 motherboard accept?
4 DDR5 slots in dual channel, up to 7,200 MHz and beyond with overclocking. DDR4 does not fit these slots: the board is DDR5 only.
Can I connect a monitor to this motherboard without a graphics card?
The HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4 outputs go up to 4K at 60 Hz, but they require a processor with integrated graphics. Without one, a graphics card is essential.
What is the fastest USB port on this motherboard?
A USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 Type-C at 20 Gbps, i.e. four times the throughput of USB 3.2 Gen 1. It is joined by six 10 Gbps ports (four Type-A and two Type-C), six 5 Gbps ports and four USB 2.0 ports.

What power supply does this MSI motherboard require?
Two 8-pin connectors for the processor, in addition to the 24-pin. The power stage has 16+1+1 phases at 90 A, mirrored on a server-grade PCB.
Can I update the BIOS without a processor installed?
Yes: the Flash BIOS and Clear CMOS buttons are accessible directly at the rear of the case, without opening it. The first is used when the processor is newer than the factory BIOS.
Does this motherboard have a digital audio output?
Yes: an S/PDIF optical output sits at the rear, next to the 7.1 high-definition audio with its isolated Audio Boost 5 circuit. Enough to feed a home cinema amplifier directly.
