The S300 fits into a DVR, NVR or hybrid surveillance recorder and writes, without a break, what up to 64 cameras capture. Toshiba designs it for small and medium-sized installations, in retail and in business alike.

Two terabytes: how many days of footage?
It all depends on the bit rate set in the recorder for each camera. Take a 4 Mbit/s stream: one camera then produces 43 GB per day of continuous recording. On the drive's nominal 2 TB, that gives, in full days:

Halving the bit rate doubles these durations, and motion-triggered recording extends them further. To keep more cameras for longer, the same series comes in larger capacities.
Built to write continuously
A surveillance drive spends its life writing, while the recorder occasionally reads back a sequence. Toshiba gives it 128 MB of cache management that shares the buffer between reads and writes as activity changes. The annual workload is rated at 180 TB, the mean time to failure at 1 million hours, and the unrecoverable read error rate at one bit per 1014 read.
Several drives side by side, without disturbing each other
In a multi-bay recorder, every spinning drive shakes its neighbours. The S300 has rotational vibration sensors that compensate for these movements, plus shock sensors. It withstands 70 G in operation and 350 G when off, over 2 ms. When the temperature rises, it adjusts the speed at which its heads move to use less power, with less noise and vibration.

The S300 is designed for DVR and NVR recorders, not for a RAID array: for RAID storage, choose a drive designed and tested for that use.

Up to 64 cameras in high resolution simultaneously. This figure reflects what the drive can absorb in continuous writing; how long footage is kept then depends on its capacity (2 TB here), the number of cameras, their resolution, the codec and the frame rate set in the recorder.
Can it run day and night without interruption?
Yes. It is designed for 24/7 operation, with a workload rating of 180 TB per year and a mean time to failure (MTTF) of 1 million hours. It operates between 0 and 70 °C and has a built-in shock sensor, useful for a recorder installed in a technical room or a poorly ventilated enclosure.
What recording technology does it use?
SMR (shingled magnetic) recording, with the Advanced Format sector layout and a rotation speed of 5,400 rpm. Sustained throughput reaches 184 MB/s, plenty to absorb a recorder's video streams. What is the difference with the 4 TB S300?

How much power does it use?
4.01 W in operation and 2.08 W at active idle, as typical values. It is powered at 5 V and 12 V through the recorder's standard SATA connector, with no power adapter to add. At idle it stays quiet: 21 dB, which suits a recorder placed in an office or a shop.
