This 3.5-inch drive goes into a DVR, NVR or hybrid recorder and records up to 64 cameras day and night. The 4 TB model doubles the capacity and the cache of the 2 TB, for small and medium-sized installations.

Three months of footage for one camera
Retention time is calculated from each camera's bit rate, set in the recorder. Take 4 Mbit/s: one day of continuous recording takes up 43 GB. Against the nominal 4 TB, that makes, in full days:

At the same bit rate, that is twice the 2 TB version. Lowering the bit rate or recording only on motion detection extends retention further.
A cache that follows the activity
The recorder writes relentlessly and now and then reads back a sequence to view. The S300's 256 MB cache is managed by an on-board algorithm that shares the buffer between the two according to the load of the moment. On endurance, Toshiba rates it at 180 TB written per year and one unrecoverable read error per 1014 bits read.
At home in an eight-bay recorder
Up to eight drives can spin in the same device. Their vibrations travel from one to the next: rotational vibration sensors compensate for them, and shock sensors watch over the heads. The drive withstands 70 G in operation and 350 G when powered off, over 2 ms. In a hot room, it adjusts the speed of its heads and reduces its power draw, noise and vibration at the same time.
