Audio-Technica ATH-M40X closed-back monitoring headphones: a perfectly flat response for mixing and critical listening in the studio.
Sound: 40 mm drivers with neodymium magnets and CCAW voice coils, linear response over 15 Hz - 24 kHz with no boosted bass or flattering highs — the key to a mix that sounds right on every system.
Design: closed-back circumaural with 90° swivelling ear cups and a folding headband, which isolates from noise, limits bleed into the mic and allows single-ear monitoring.

The M40x is tuned for a flat frequency response: it does not lift the bass and it does not soften the treble. A mix balanced on these headphones keeps that balance everywhere else.

Change the cable, not the headphones

Two detachable cables are supplied: a 3 m straight one for a fixed desk, and a 1.2 to 3 m coiled one that pulls back as soon as you step away. Both end in a gold-plated 3.5 mm stereo mini-jack, and the screw-on 6.35 mm adapter turns it into a console or headphone-amplifier plug. When a cable wears out, the cable is what you replace: the HP-CC coiled cable uses the same fitting.

It swivels, it folds, it travels

The ear cups turn 90°, so you can free one ear and stay in touch with the room without taking the headphones off. The headband then folds in on itself and the whole thing fits in the soft pouch supplied. Ear cushions and headband padding are made of professional-grade materials, meant for long sessions and for lasting.

Where it sits in the M series

The ATH-M20x and ATH-M30x have a fixed cable: the M40x is the first of the series whose cables detach, and its curve is tuned flat for critical monitoring. Above it, the ATH-M50x reaches 28 kHz on 45 mm drivers and comes with a third cable. All four share the same closed over-ear build, which you can compare in the headphones and earbuds aisle.

The M40x is a passive pair of headphones: no battery, no control on the ear cup, no electronic noise cancelling. The isolation comes from the closed shell that surrounds the ear — the same shell that limits the monitoring bleed back into the microphone during a take.

What does a flat response mean on these studio headphones?
That they add neither boosted bass nor flattering treble: they reproduce the mix exactly as it is. This is what makes a mix hold up on every system — flattering playback leads you to correct things that do not need correcting.
How many cables come with the ATH-M40X?
Two, both detachable: a 3 m straight cable for the studio and a 1.2 to 3 m coiled cable for field work. You switch from one to the other in a second, depending on the workstation.
Is the cable easy to change?
