Are drives included with the RS4826xs+?
No, the RS4826xs+ comes without drives: its 12 bays take 3.5-inch SATA hard drives or 2.5-inch SATA SSDs, from the Enterprise HAT5300 series and the SAT5200 SSDs that Synology lists for it. With 24 TB drives, it provides 288 TB raw on its own and 1,152 TB with three expansion units.
What is the difference between the RS4826xs+ and the RS3626xs?
Same 2U 12-bay chassis, but the RS4826xs+ goes one step further: eight-core Xeon D-1739 instead of six cores, 16 GB of RDIMM memory expandable to 96 GB instead of 8 GB expandable to 48 GB, expansion to 48 drives instead of 36, and 1 PB volumes. It also supports 65,536 snapshots per system versus 4,096.
Can the RS4826xs+ create 1 PB volumes?
Yes, on two conditions: 64 GB of installed memory and a storage pool in RAID 6. Otherwise, a volume tops out at 200 TB with 32 GB of memory, and at 108 TB below that. The server ships with 16 GB and 6 slots, each taking a 16 GB RDIMM module (part number D4ER02-16G).
Does the RS4826xs+ have M.2 slots for SSD cache?
Not internally: NVMe cache is added with a card in one of the two PCIe 4.0 x8 slots, the M2D20 for two M.2 SSDs, or the E10M20-T1, which adds a 10 GbE port. The second slot remains free for a 25 GbE E25G30-F2 card or a Fibre Channel adapter.
Can the RS4826xs+ be managed remotely?
Yes, through its dedicated out-of-band management port: turning the server back on, checking its critical logs or diagnosing a fault is done remotely, even when powered off. The two 10 GbE RJ-45 ports stay dedicated to data and can be aggregated to combine throughput or fail over automatically if a link drops.
Which rail kit does the RS4826xs+ need?
The Synology RKS-02 sliding rail kit, sold separately, for a 4-post 19-inch rack. The RS4826xs+ takes up 2U for 724 mm of depth and weighs 14.5 kg without drives: check the usable depth of the cabinet, and leave room at the back for the Mini-SAS HD expansion cables.
Is the RS4826xs+ noisy?
Yes, it is built for a server room: its four 80 mm fans reach 46.3 dB(A) in operation. It draws 155.24 W in access and 76.15 W when the drives are in hibernation, powered by two redundant 550 W units. It operates at an ambient temperature between 0 °C and 35 °C.
