Are drives included with the RS6426xs+?
No, the RS6426xs+ is sold without drives: its 16 bays take 3.5-inch SATA hard drives or 2.5-inch SATA SSDs, from the Enterprise HAT5300 series and the SAT5200 SSDs that Synology lists for it. With 24 TB drives, it provides 384 TB raw on its own and 1,536 TB with four expansion units.
What is the difference between the RS6426xs+ and the RS4826xs+?
Capacity: the RS6426xs+ is a 3U 16-bay rack expandable to 64 drives, versus 2U, 12 bays and 48 drives for the RS4826xs+. The Xeon D-1739 processor, memory expandable to 96 GB and 1 PB volumes are shared. The RS6426xs+ goes further in video surveillance, with 285 IP cameras versus 125.
How many cameras can the RS6426xs+ record?
Up to 285 IP cameras in 1080p with the H.265 codec, 280 with H.264, and up to 120 cameras in 4K. Two licences are included; additional ones are bought separately. Enough to centralise recording for a large site or several branches on a single server, on top of its storage functions.
Does the RS6426xs+ have M.2 slots for SSD cache?
Not internally: NVMe cache is installed with a card in one of the two PCIe 4.0 x8 slots, the M2D20 for two M.2 SSDs or the E10M20-T1, which adds a 10 GbE port. The second slot remains available for a 25 GbE E25G30-F2 card or for a Fibre Channel adapter.
How far can the RS6426xs+ memory be expanded?
Up to 96 GB: it ships with a 16 GB DDR4 ECC RDIMM module and has 6 slots, each accepting 16 GB (Synology part number D4ER02-16G). Installing at least 64 GB unlocks 1 PB volumes in RAID 6; with 32 GB, a volume remains limited to 200 TB.
Which rail kit does the RS6426xs+ need?
The Synology RKS-02 sliding rail kit, sold separately, for a 4-post 19-inch rack. The RS6426xs+ takes up 3U for 656.5 mm of depth and weighs 17.9 kg without drives: once its 16 bays are filled, plan for two people to mount it in the cabinet.
Can the RS6426xs+ be managed remotely?
Yes, thanks to its dedicated out-of-band management port: you turn the server back on, read its critical logs and diagnose a fault remotely, even when it is powered off. The two 10 GbE RJ-45 ports stay dedicated to data and can be aggregated to combine throughput or fail over automatically.
