What rack depth does the RackStation RS1221+ need?
30 cm — half the length of a conventional 2U unit. It fits a two-post rack or a shallow cabinet, where an ordinary rack NAS would not fit. This is the single power supply model; the RP version is 38 cm deep.
Does the RS1221+ come with drives?
No, the drives are ordered separately. The eight bays accept 2.5" or 3.5" SATA drives, either hard drives or SSDs. This is a cost to budget for from the outset: across eight bays, it often exceeds the price of the chassis.
Does the RS1221+ have a backup power supply?
It runs on a single power supply unit; it is the RS1221RP+ version that has redundant power supplies. In return, it is 8 cm shallower and fits into shorter racks.
What performance can you expect from the Synology RS1221+?
Over 2,315 MB/s sequential read, 1,147 MB/s write, and over 100,000 IOPS in 4K random read. MB/s applies to large files, IOPS to numerous short accesses: the two measurements complement each other.
What happens if a drive fails in the RS1221+?
Service continues. RAID 1, 5, 6, 10 and SHR spread the data so as to survive the loss of one drive — two with RAID 6. The failed drive is hot-swapped, without switching the machine off, and the volume then rebuilds.
How many drives can the RS1221+ support?
Twelve, with an RX418 expansion unit designed for the same reduced footprint. You start with eight bays and expand later, without changing NAS or migrating volumes.
What does the ECC memory in the RS1221+ protect?
File integrity. Combined with the Btrfs file system and its snapshots, it prevents silent data corruption — the kind you only discover when you reopen an old file. It can be upgraded from 4 to 32 GB.
How can the RS1221+ be made faster after purchase?
Two separate routes: a PCIe slot for a 10 or 25 GbE card if the network is the bottleneck, or an NVMe SSD cache card if random access is. The four built-in 1 GbE ports can also be aggregated.
Can the RS1221+ be used as a video recorder?
Yes, for up to 40 IP cameras with Surveillance Station. At the same time, the DSM operating system lets it back up workstations, host a private cloud and synchronise files across multiple sites.
Is the Synology RS1221+ new and under warranty?
New, part number RS1221PLUS, in original Synology packaging, with a 3-year warranty backed by the invoice. The datasheet lists all the specifications.
