How many microphones drive the WH-1000XM5's noise cancelling?
Eight, four per ear cup, controlled by two processors: the QN1 dedicated to noise cancelling and the integrated V1. It is this combination that Sony highlights for cancelling out voices and unwanted high frequencies.
Does the noise cancelling adapt to altitude on a plane?
Yes: the Auto NC Optimizer adjusts the cancelling to the conditions of use and the environment, atmospheric pressure included. That is exactly what changes in an aircraft cabin, where noise and pressure vary together.
Does fast charging work with any charger?
No: the 3 minutes that give 3 hours of listening require a USB-PD adapter, available as an option. With an ordinary charger, charging still works but is slower. The quoted battery life is 30 hours.
What is the Speak-to-Chat feature?
As soon as you start speaking, the headphones stop the music and let ambient sound in; playback resumes on its own after the conversation. The microphones and signal processing recognise your voice, without you having to touch the headphones.
What does the LDAC codec bring to these Sony headphones?
It transmits about three times more data than a standard Bluetooth connection, which allows the XM5 to be Hi-Res Audio both wired and wireless. Your phone must also support LDAC, though.
What does DSEE Extreme technology do to a compressed file?
It restores the high frequencies lost to compression in real time, using artificial intelligence to recognise the instruments, genres and individual elements of a track. The processing therefore adapts to the content rather than being applied uniformly.
Do calls come through well in a very noisy place?
Three elements take care of that: four beamforming microphones, an AI-based noise reduction algorithm, and a structure that blocks wind noise. The processing isolates your voice rather than simply turning everything down.
Can the headphones stay connected to two devices?
Yes, they pair with two Bluetooth devices at the same time: when a call comes in, they detect which one is ringing and connect to it automatically. A button also lets you switch manually from one source to the other.
What is in the box with the Sony WH-1000XM5?
Three items besides the headphones: a carrying case, a headphone cable of about 1.2 m and a USB charging cable. The jack cable lets you listen with a flat battery or from a source without Bluetooth.
Does the music pause when you take the headphones off?
Yes, playback stops as soon as the headphones leave your head and resumes when you put them back on. The playback controls are touch-sensitive and located on the right ear cup.
Is the packaging of these headphones eco-friendly?
Yes: the packaging contains no plastic, is low in toxicity and is designed with reuse in mind. The headphones themselves use recycled plastic sourced from automotive parts.
What do you get when these headphones are used with a Sony BRAVIA XR TV?
Access to 360 spatial sound, under two stated conditions: the WLA-NS7 wireless transmitter and a firmware update for the TV, which requires an Internet connection. So it is not available without an accessory.
