Frequently asked questions about this product

Does the DS1823xs+ have a built-in 10 Gigabit port?
Yes, built in — not optional. It offers one 10GbE port and two 1GbE ports, plus a separate 1GbE port dedicated to out-of-band management, which lets you administer the machine even when the operating system stops responding.
Can SSD cache be added to the DS1823xs+ without losing a bay?
Yes: two M.2 NVMe slots are built in, independent of the eight bays. They take an SSD cache, or an all-flash storage pool — the eight bays then remain available for capacity.
Are drives included with the DS1823xs+?
No. The SATA drives for the eight bays and the M.2 NVMe SSDs for the cache are ordered separately. On this model, there are therefore two costs to plan for, not just one.
What performance does the DS1823xs+ achieve?
Over 3,100 MB/s sequential read and 2,600 MB/s sequential write, in a desktop unit. The processor is an AMD Ryzen V1780B, backed by 8 GB of DDR4 ECC, expandable to 32 GB.
How far can the DS1823xs+ be expanded?
It accepts up to ten additional drive bays through expansion units, for eighteen in total. The same chassis also accepts, as needed, a 25 GbE or Fibre Channel card.
How many devices can the DS1823xs+ back up?
300 endpoints, while also managing 75 IP cameras with Surveillance Station. That is the capacity of a complete IT department: workstations, servers, virtual machines and video surveillance on a single machine.
Does the DS1823xs+ need a server rack?
No, it is a 6.2 kg desktop unit. It was designed for environments where no rack or server room is available: it sits on a shelf and provides the same services as a rack-mounted server.
Which RAID levels does the DS1823xs+ support?
RAID 1, 5, 6 and 10, as well as RAID F1, designed for all-SSD volumes: it deliberately distributes wear unevenly so that the drives do not reach the end of their life at the same time. The drives are hot-swappable.
Which expansion ports does the DS1823xs+ have?
Two eSATA ports, for the expansion units, and three USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports for an external drive or a backup copy outside the NAS.
Is the Synology DS1823xs+ new, and what warranty does it come with?
New, part number DS1823XS+, in original Synology packaging, with a 5-year warranty backed by the invoice — the longest in the range. The datasheet gives full details.
