Frequently asked questions about this product

Is Windows supplied with this ThinkBook 14?
No: it ships with FreeDOS, without an operating system or preinstalled software. A Windows licence and its installation must therefore be planned before the machine is put into service. The hardware, for its part, is complete as soon as you open the box, carry bag included.
Is there a free memory slot left, and how far can you upgrade?
Yes: of the two DDR5 SO-DIMM slots, only one is occupied by the 16 GB DDR5-5600 module. You can therefore add a second module, switch to dual-channel and go up to 64 GB in total — enough to keep the machine going through several years of professional use.
Can you add a second SSD to this ThinkBook?
Yes, and it is unusual on a 14-inch laptop just 17.5 mm thick: it has two M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 x4 slots and uses only one of them for its 512 GB SSD. The second remains available for an additional drive, up to 2 TB per slot, without touching the system drive.
Is the keyboard backlit?
No: on this reference, the French AZERTY keyboard is not backlit — worth knowing if you often work in low light or on the move in the evening. It is, however, spill-resistant and sits above an enlarged 120 × 75 mm touchpad compatible with Precision TouchPad.
Is the touchscreen comfortable to use, and is the panel matte?
The 14-inch WUXGA IPS panel is indeed 10-point touch and anti-glare, at 300 nits. Two points to be aware of: touch is provided by an added film on the panel, and the refresh rate is 60 Hz with 45% NTSC — a screen tuned for office work, not for gaming or colour accuracy.
Can you sign in with facial recognition?
No: the webcam is a Full HD 1080p camera without an infrared sensor, and Windows Hello facial recognition requires an infrared camera. Quick unlocking is done with the fingerprint reader built into the power button, complemented by a privacy shutter, an fTPM 2.0 chip and BIOS self-healing.
How long does it take to recharge the battery?
The 45 Wh battery gets back to 80% in 60 minutes with an adapter of 65 W or more — the one supplied is precisely a 65 W USB-C adapter. Both USB-C ports support Power Delivery 3.0: you can charge through either one.
Is there an SD card reader for offloading a camera?
Yes, a 4-in-1 reader: SD, SDHC, SDXC and MMC is built into the chassis, with no external adapter to carry. There are also two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, one of them Always On, a 3.5 mm headphone/microphone combo jack and an HDMI 2.1 port for connecting a monitor or a projector.
How many external monitors can you connect to it?
Three video outputs: a USB-C Thunderbolt 4 port with DisplayPort 2.1, a 10 Gbps USB-C port with DisplayPort 1.4 and an HDMI 2.1 port up to 4K/60 Hz. USB-C and Thunderbolt 4 docking stations are supported, turning the laptop into a desktop workstation connected with a single cable.
Is there a network port, and can you add 4G to it?
A gigabit RJ-45 port is built in despite the 17.5 mm thickness, alongside 2x2 Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. However, this platform has no WWAN module: no built-in 4G, so mobile connectivity relies on tethering from your phone.
Can this slim laptop stand up to daily travel?
It has passed MIL-STD-810H military-grade tests, its lid is made of sandblasted anodised aluminium (PC-ABS base) and its keyboard is spill-resistant. The hinge opens flat, to 180°, a useful position for showing the screen to someone sitting opposite, and a Kensington Nano lock slot is provided.
Is it light enough to carry around every day?
Yes: 1.36 kg for 313.5 × 224 × 17.5 mm, which puts it in the category of ultraportables under 1.5 kg. It charges with a compact 65 W USB-C adapter, with no bulky proprietary charger, and its carry bag is already in the box.
What exactly is in the box?
The laptop, its 65 W USB-C adapter, the quick start guide and a free Lenovo Casual Toploader bag — designed for 15.6-inch laptops, so it leaves some room around a 14-inch one. The fabric of this bag uses 90% recycled ocean-bound plastic.
What environmental and eye-comfort certifications does it carry?
ENERGY STAR 9.0, EPEAT Gold, TCO Certified 10.0, RoHS, ErP Lot 6/26 and FSC-certified packaging. For your eyes: TÜV Rheinland Eyesafe and software blue light reduction. The SAR measured at body level is 0.421 W/kg, against a regulatory limit of 2 W/kg.
Is the ThinkBook 14 Gen 8 new, and how long is the warranty?
Yes: a new, sealed machine, delivered with its invoice, which serves as the warranty document for 2 years, on a platform with support announced until September 2031. The exact configuration of reference 21SJ004HTP is detailed in the datasheet (PDF).
