Frequently asked questions about this product
How many free memory slots are left on the ThinkPad L16 Gen 2?
There are two DDR5 SO-DIMM slots and only one is occupied by the 16 GB module. So you can add a memory module without discarding anything, enable dual-channel mode and go up to 64 GB of DDR5-5600.
Can a second SSD be added to this ThinkPad?
No: there is only one M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 x4 slot, already occupied by the 512 GB SSD. Upgrading therefore means replacing this drive, up to 2 TB. The installed SSD is an Opal 2.0 model.
Can it be charged via USB-C and connected to a docking station?
Yes to both. The two USB-C ports are Thunderbolt 4 / USB4 40 Gbit/s with USB PD 3.1 and DisplayPort 2.1: the supplied power adapter is a 65 W USB-C unit, and Thunderbolt or USB-C docking stations are supported.
Which video outputs can be used to connect external monitors?
Three: the two Thunderbolt 4 ports, which carry DisplayPort 2.1, and an HDMI 2.1 that goes up to 4K at 60 Hz. A USB-C monitor therefore connects directly, without an adapter.
Is there an SD card reader or a smart card reader on this model?
No in both cases, and no NFC either: plan on a USB adapter if you often offload memory cards. On the other hand, connectivity remains generous, with three USB-A ports, a headphone jack and, above all, a built-in Gigabit RJ-45 port.
How do you unlock the session, and how secure is it?
With your fingerprint — the reader is built into the power button and uses Match-on-Chip technology — or with Windows Hello facial recognition via the infrared camera. On top of this come a discrete TPM 2.0 chip and the ThinkShield security suite.
Can you protect your screen from prying eyes in an open-plan office or on the move?
Yes: the L16 Gen 2 includes Privacy Guard with Privacy Alert, a software solution. The 5 MP webcam can be covered by its built-in shutter, and a Kensington Nano Security Slot (2.5 × 6 mm) lets you physically lock down the machine.
Is there any preinstalled software to uninstall at first start-up?
None. The machine comes with Windows 11 Pro in French and nothing else: no trial suite, no third-party utility to clean up. You start from a clean system, which simplifies deployment across a company's fleet.
Is the 16-inch screen comfortable, and is it suitable for colour work?
The 16" WUXGA 1920 × 1200 IPS panel in 16:10 format gives more usable height than a 16:9 screen, with 400 nits, an anti-glare finish and an 87% screen-to-body ratio. Its 45% NTSC coverage means it is not intended for colour-critical work.
Is a 16-inch laptop still easy to carry every day?
It weighs 1.79 kg for 357.2 × 253.4 mm, and its profile slims down to 10.96 mm at the front, against 24.75 mm at its thickest point. The charger is a simple 65 W USB-C power adapter, so it takes up little room in your bag.
Is the claimed ruggedness of ThinkPads actually measured?
Yes: this model has passed MIL-STD-810H testing. Lenovo puts its ThinkPads through 12 standards, 26 procedures and more than 200 quality checks — arctic cold, desert dust storms, extreme temperatures, pressure and vibration.
Does this ThinkPad carry energy and environmental labels?
Yes, on several fronts: ENERGY STAR 9.0, EPEAT Gold, TCO Certified generation 10, RoHS compliance and the ErP Lot 6/26 directive.
What does the NPU in this AI PC actually do?
The Core Ultra 7 255U integrates an Intel AI Boost accelerator delivering up to 12 TOPS: enhanced video conferencing tools, document automation with scanning and summarisation, and email management and scheduling.
How long is the warranty on this ThinkPad L16 Gen 2?
3 years, courier pick-up or carry-in: it is an extension of the original 1-year warranty, included from the factory on this reference, and support for the model runs until 20 December 2031. Full details are in the Lenovo datasheet (PDF).
