Frequently asked questions about this product
Do I need to buy extra drives with this DS225+ 16 TB bundle?
No, the drives are in the box: two units for 16 TB in total. That is the whole difference from a NAS sold without drives — you plug it in, create the user accounts, and everything is up and running the same day.
How are the 16 TB usable across two bays?
In RAID 1, both drives hold an identical copy: usable space is then halved, but work carries on if one of the two fails. This is the trade-off specific to a 2-bay NAS — capacity versus safety.
How many cameras can be connected without an additional licence?
Two: the bundle includes two camera licences. Surveillance Station can manage up to 25 IP cameras at 1080p on this model, but licences beyond the first two are purchased separately. This is the point to plan for if you are equipping an entire premises.
Does the DS225+ have a network port faster than Gigabit?
Yes, one 2.5 GbE port, alongside a 1 GbE port with automatic failover. 2.5 GbE runs over a standard RJ-45 cable: provided your switch supports it, that is two and a half times the speed without recabling.
What transfer speeds can you expect from the DS225+ Power bundle?
Up to 282 MB/s sequential read and 217 MB/s sequential write. These figures come from lab tests: actual throughput depends on your network and the number of simultaneous users. The processor is a 4-core Intel Celeron J4125, 2.0 GHz up to 2.7 GHz.
Can the DS225+ memory be expanded?
Yes, from 2 to 6 GB of DDR4. This is useful headroom as soon as you add more DSM applications — backup, photos, surveillance — all running in parallel on the same machine.
Is the data on the NAS protected from prying eyes?
The processor provides hardware encryption of shared folders, and permissions are set user by user. Hardware encryption avoids the collapse in throughput that purely software-based encryption would cause.
Can computers and mobile devices be backed up automatically?
Yes, automatic backup covers PCs, mobile devices and cloud applications. The NAS becomes the collection point for everything that lives elsewhere, and remains remotely accessible from a computer, a mobile device or just a browser.
Is this DS225+ 16 TB NAS bundle new and under warranty?
New, assembled and tested before shipping, drives included. The invoice serves as the warranty document for 1 year. The datasheet details all the specifications of the NAS.
Up to 1,181 MB/s sequential read and 1,180 MB/s sequential write, over two 2.5 GbE ports. Workstation backup, private cloud, virtual machines and video surveillance under DSM. Drives sold separately.
