Frequently asked questions about this product

What is the Shure SRH440A intended for?
Podcasting, home recording and editing and mixing. Shure is targeting monitoring: hearing exactly what was captured during a vocal take, not a flattering version of the signal.
What does uncoloured sound reproduction mean?
That the headphones add neither bass nor brightness to what they receive: what you hear matches what was recorded. It is the opposite of consumer headphones, tuned to flatter music — and it is what lets you correct a mix without getting it wrong.
What happens if the SRH440A cable breaks?
It can be replaced: the straight cable is detachable. On studio headphones plugged in and unplugged several times a day, it is the part that fails first, and being able to change it saves replacing the whole headphones.
Can you connect them to an audio interface or a mixing console?
Yes, a gold-plated threaded 6.35 mm jack adapter comes with the headphones. The thread screws it onto the plug: it cannot stay stuck in the console's socket when you unplug, a classic studio mishap.
Does sound leak into the microphone during a vocal take?
The design is closed-back over-ear: the cushions enclose the ear and reduce background noise. This is what makes the headphones usable in a vocal booth, where an open-back model would send the monitor mix back into the microphone.
How good are the 40 mm drivers of these Shure headphones?
They are dynamic neodymium magnet drivers, which Shure associates with a natural, well-balanced response with low distortion. Over a session of several hours, it is this lack of harshness that limits listening fatigue.
Do these headphones have electronic noise cancellation?
No, there is no active cancellation: the isolation is passive, provided by the closed cushions around the ear. No processing alters what you are listening to, which is precisely the aim of monitoring headphones.
Can the SRH440A withstand intensive daily use?
