The PX-1 is a true large-diaphragm condenser microphone: a 25 mm capsule, a class A FET preamp and a cardioid pattern. It is made for those who record their voice, guitar or podcast and want to move from a desk mic to a studio chain.

A large diaphragm for the voice

The 25 mm capsule, in 6-micron gold-sputtered Mylar, covers 20 Hz to 18 kHz with a sensitivity of 25 mV/Pa. Its self-noise does not exceed 18 dB SPL A-weighted; at the other end of the scale, 135 dB SPL leaves headroom in front of a guitar amp or a powerful voice sung up close.

Speak into it from the front, logo side

The PX-1 picks up from the side, not from the top. The side bearing the PreSonus logo always faces the voice or the instrument; the rigid mount supplied holds the mic on a stand or an arm and lets you point it that way. The cardioid pattern favours what is in front of it and reduces what comes from behind.

An XLR chain, powered at 48 V

The PX-1 connects over XLR to an audio interface or a mixer whose input supplies phantom power: 48 V is the recommended voltage, a lower voltage reduces its headroom and sensitivity. You need a balanced male-to-female XLR cable, which is not in the box. The box contains the microphone, its rigid mount and a carrying bag.

The mic stays silent? Check that 48 V phantom power is switched on for the interface or mixer input: without it, a condenser microphone produces no signal.

Frequently asked questions about this product

Does the PX-1 connect to a computer over USB?
No, it is a microphone with an XLR output: it connects to an audio interface or a mixer, which then links it to the computer. The input must supply 48 V phantom power, essential for this condenser mic. A balanced male-to-female XLR cable is needed; it is not supplied.
Which interface or mixer is needed for the PX-1?
An interface or mixer with an XLR mic input with 48 V phantom power. 48 V is the recommended voltage: a lower supply reduces the microphone's headroom and sensitivity. The interface's preamp then sets the gain according to the voice or instrument being recorded.
Why choose a large-diaphragm microphone for vocals?
Its 25 mm capsule and its class A FET preamp render the voice with detail across the whole 20 Hz to 18 kHz band, for a self-noise of only 18 dB SPL. The cardioid pattern favours what is in front of the mic and reduces sound arriving from behind, useful in an untreated room.
From which side should you speak into the PX-1?
From the side bearing the PreSonus logo: the PX-1 is a side-address microphone, which picks up from the side and not from its top. The logo must always face the voice or the instrument. The rigid mount supplied lets you point it this way on a mic stand.
Can the PX-1 handle loud sources such as a guitar amp?
Yes, up to 135 dB SPL of maximum sound pressure, which leaves headroom in front of a guitar amp or a powerful voice sung up close. Its 20 Hz to 18 kHz response covers the spoken or sung voice as well as the acoustic or electric guitar.
What is in the PX-1 box?
The PX-1 microphone, a rigid mount to fit it on a mic stand and a carrying bag. There is no XLR cable, no shock mount and no pop filter: for a voice recorded up close, a pop filter and a stable stand should be added.
