A compact mic
designed for drums.

The ATM230 targets toms, snares and percussion. Its patented capsule handles the high sound pressure of a hit captured up close and delivers a full sound, with generous lows and a crisp attack.

It fits between the drums

Short and discreet, it can be positioned in many ways around the kit. The supplied AT8665 mount holds it on the drum, and its hypercardioid pattern focuses pickup on the targeted element while reducing what arrives from the sides and rear, for better source isolation.

Made for the stage as well as the studio

Its rugged metal construction withstands the rigours of live shows as well as recording sessions. As a dynamic mic, it connects through its integral XLR connector with no power at all, to a mixer or audio interface.

This reference is a single mic. To cover several drums, count one ATM230 and one XLR cable per element: the cable is not included.

Which drum kit elements should the Audio-Technica ATM230 be placed on?
On toms and snares, and on other percussion. Compact and discreet, it slips easily between the drums and can be positioned in many ways around the kit, and its capsule easily handles the high levels of a hit captured very close up, in the studio as on stage.
Does the ATM230 need phantom power?
No, it is a dynamic mic: it works without power and connects directly through its integral 3-pin XLR output to a mixer or audio interface. No XLR cable is included in the box: plan one per mic, long enough to reach from the kit to the mixer or stage box.
Why a hypercardioid pattern on a drum kit?
To isolate the targeted drum: the hypercardioid pattern focuses pickup on the front and reduces sound arriving from the sides and rear, and so from neighbouring elements. Placed close to a tom or a snare, the ATM230 mainly captures that element, which gives more freedom when mixing each drum.
