The AT4050 is the multi-pattern microphone of Audio-Technica's 40 Series: a dual-diaphragm condenser, transformerless, hand-assembled. Cardioid, omnidirectional or figure-of-eight, it moves from vocals to piano, strings, overheads and amps, in the studio as on stage.

Two diaphragms for a consistent pattern

The capsule carries two diaphragms: this is what keeps a precise pattern across the whole range, from 20 Hz to 18 kHz, whether the selector is on cardioid, omnidirectional or figure-of-eight. Without a transformer, the electronics leave the low end undistorted and follow attacks quickly, on a drum kit as on an orchestra.

Clear highs, full lows

Transparent highs and mids, rich lows, and a slight low-mid bump that warms up voices: this is the AT4050's sonic signature. It handles 149 dB SPL without exceeding 1 % distortion, for 17 dB SPL of self-noise and a 132 dB dynamic range. An 80 Hz high-pass filter and a -10 dB pad complete the settings, all on the microphone body.

Shock mount, cover and case

The AT8449a shock mount screws onto a 5/8"-27 stand and isolates the microphone from vibrations. A dust cover and a rigid case protect it between sessions and on the move.

The AT4050 requires 48 V phantom power (4.2 mA) on its XLR input. The XLR cable is not supplied: plan for a balanced 3-pin cable.

Three, chosen with a selector on the body: cardioid to isolate a voice or an instrument, omnidirectional to capture all around the microphone, and figure-of-eight for front and rear while rejecting the sides. Its dual-diaphragm capsule keeps a consistent pattern across the whole frequency range.

Which sources is the AT4050 designed for?
