AC or AX: is Wi-Fi 6 worth the difference?

If your home has fewer than ten connected devices and your subscription tops out at 100 Mb/s, an Archer C6 or C64 will do exactly the same job as an AX model, for half the price. Wi-Fi 6 becomes genuinely useful beyond fifteen simultaneous devices, on a fast fibre connection, or in a building where neighbouring networks saturate the channels. Your own devices also have to be compatible to benefit from it.

The advertised speed is not the speed you get

An AX3000 adds up the theoretical speeds of the two bands, 2.4 and 5 GHz. No device will ever receive that total: it connects to one band at a time. And a router does not create bandwidth — if your line delivers 50 Mb/s, no model will do better. What a good router improves is range, stability and the number of devices served properly at the same time.

Router, repeater or access point

A router creates the network and distributes it. A repeater relays an existing signal, at the cost of losing about half the speed at each hop. An access point extends the network over an Ethernet cable, without that loss — it is always the best solution when running a cable is possible. If your problem is a dead zone upstairs, do not change router: add an access point or a mesh system.
