Does a USB cable come with the HP LaserJet M438n?
Yes, the box contains a USB cable, in addition to the printer, the power cord, the toner cartridge and the manual. Connecting it directly to a computer therefore requires nothing more. An Ethernet cable is still needed for network use, and installing the drivers requires a CD drive or an Internet connection.
What is the yield of the toner supplied with the M438n?
It is a starter toner of approximately 4,000 pages, not the full-capacity cartridge. The standard 335A replacement lasts approximately 7,400 pages, and the high-capacity 335X version approximately 13,700 pages: the difference is felt from the second month of heavy use. All three yields are declared according to the ISO/IEC 19752 standard.
Is the drum separate from the toner on this M438n?
Yes, they are two separate consumables. The 57A imaging drum (CF257A) is rated for approximately 80,000 pages, or about ten standard toners: it only needs replacing rarely, and each empty cartridge means discarding only the toner itself. A genuine drum is already in place when the machine is first set up, alongside the starter toner.
Does the HP LaserJet M438n print duplex automatically?
No, duplex printing is manual: the stack has to be fed back in by hand to print the reverse side. This is the main limitation of this model and the first thing to check if your documents are always printed on both sides. The machine also has only two trays, with no input or output expansion in the catalogue.
Is there an automatic document feeder on the M438n?
No, the scanner is a flatbed-only model, with no feeder and no automatic duplex scanning: each original is placed on the glass. On the other hand, this glass accepts a full A3 document, up to 297 × 432 mm, which an A4 feeder cannot do — this is precisely what makes this machine worthwhile for plans or registers.
Does the HP LaserJet M438n have Wi-Fi?
No. It connects via 10/100Base-TX Ethernet or Hi-Speed USB 2.0. Once connected to the wired network, it can be shared between several computers in the office as usual, but no wireless connectivity is built into the machine. The embedded web server then lets you manage it remotely, over SSL/TLS.
Can a non-HP compatible toner be used in the M438n?
It is equipped with HP Dynamic Security: it works with cartridges that have a new or reused HP chip, and cartridges with a non-HP chip may not work. Firmware updates maintain this blocking and can disable a cartridge that was working until then.
What monthly volume can the HP LaserJet M438n handle?

Can you print on envelopes with this A3 printer?
Envelopes are specified for occasional use only, and transparencies are not supported. Tray 1 accepts 60 to 163 g/m² and custom sizes from 98 × 148 to 297 × 432 mm; tray 2 is limited to 60-110 g/m². For regular mailings, this is not the right machine.
How does scanning work on the LaserJet M438n?
It scans to the computer, in TWAIN or WIA, including over the network, and produces PDF, JPEG or TIFF at 600 dpi optical. The control panel also offers two-sided ID card copying, combining 2 to 16 A3 pages on one sheet, eleven density levels and zoom from 25 to 400%.
How many sheets can be loaded, and can a tray be added?
350 sheets in total: a 100-sheet tray 1 and a 250-sheet tray 2. These are the machine's only two trays, as no input or output expansion is offered in the catalogue. The output tray holds up to 250 sheets, enough to start a print run without watching it constantly.
Is the HP LaserJet M438n heavy?
25 kg including consumables, for 560 × 540 × 417 mm when closed: it is a machine to place on the floor or on sturdy furniture, not on the corner of a desk. The measured sound pressure when printing is 51 dB(A). It operates between 10 and 30 °C, at 20 to 80% relative humidity.
