Frequently asked questions about this product

Does the MF272dw have an automatic document feeder for scanning a stack of pages?
No. The MF272dw scans on the flatbed only, on the glass: each page is placed and removed by hand, which matters if you copy or scan whole files. It is the MF275dw in the same series that gets the 35-sheet automatic document feeder. The flatbed scanner itself is colour, up to 216 mm wide and 600 × 600 dpi optical.
Is the Canon MF272dw screen a touchscreen?
No: the panel is a 5-line black and white LCD screen, not touch-sensitive. The 6-line touchscreen comes on the MF275dw, the other model in the series.
Which toner does it use, and how many pages with the one supplied?
It comes with a 700-page starter cartridge. After that, there are two references to choose from: the 071 (1,200 pages) or the 071H (2,500 pages), yields measured according to the ISO/IEC 19752 standard. Only one black cartridge to manage, and a toner saving mode is available.
Does the Canon MF272dw fax?
No. It is a 3-in-1: printing, copying and scanning. Fax is reserved for the MF275dw in the same series, the only one with a 33.6 kbps modem, 256 pages of memory and the optional TEL 6 KIT handset. It can, however, scan to the cloud in TIFF, JPEG, PDF and PNG, and run up to 999 copies of the same document.
Does automatic duplex printing work with all sizes and all papers?
No, it is more restrictive than single-sided printing: automatic duplex accepts A4, Legal, Letter, OFFICIO, B-OFFICIO, M-OFFICIO and Foolscap, at 60 to 105 g/m². The cassette, for its part, goes up to 163 g/m² and down to A6: those media print single-sided. Speed also drops: 18.5 ipm in duplex compared with 29 ppm single-sided.
Can you print envelopes, labels or postcards?
Yes. The cassette accepts heavy paper, labels, postcards and envelopes (COM10, Monarch, DL, C5), from 60 to 163 g/m², up to custom sizes from 76 × 127 mm to 216 × 356 mm. The multipurpose tray takes only one sheet at a time: for a batch of envelopes, load the cassette.
Can you scan directly to PDF on the computer?
Scanning to a PC is done in JPEG, sheet by sheet. PDF (like TIFF and PNG) is available when scanning to the cloud, via MF Scan Utility or the Canon PRINT Business app. A detail that matters if you archive a lot of multi-page documents.
What power rating should you allow for, especially to connect it to a UPS?
Allow about 530 W when printing and up to 1,300 W at peak: it is this peak that should guide your choice of UPS. At rest, it drops to 4.8 W in standby and 1 W in sleep mode, for a typical consumption of 0.23 kWh per week according to ENERGY STAR.
Is it noisy if installed in a shared office?
It produces 50 dB when printing single-sided and 51 dB in duplex sound pressure, with a maximum sound power of 69.3 dB. In sleep mode, it is inaudible as defined by the ISO 7779 standard: its level falls below the room's background noise. It also requires a room between 10 and 30 °C, with 20 to 80% humidity without condensation.
Does it need a lot of space around it for installation?
Yes, more than its dimensions suggest. The unit measures 372 × 320 × 271 mm and weighs 9 kg, but the space to set aside is 372 × 598 × 526 mm: allow nearly 60 cm of usable depth. As for the power outlet, a standard 220-240 V at 50/60 Hz is all it needs.
Can you connect it via Ethernet and add it to a company network?
Yes: 10/100 Ethernet, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and USB 2.0 are all there, plus direct wireless connection. On the security side, it supports TLS 1.3, IP address filtering, IEEE 802.1X, SNMPv3 and WPA2-EAP — enough to register it on a managed corporate network.
Does it work with a Mac, a Linux computer or a smartphone?
Yes to all three. macOS 10.12 and later, Windows 11 through to Server 2012, and Linux for printing as well as scanning, with drivers distributed as downloads only. From a mobile device: AirPrint on iOS, Mopria and the Canon plug-in on Android, plus Microsoft Universal Print.
Is the printer new, and what warranty applies?
