Frequently asked questions about this product

What is the toner yield of the Canon i-SENSYS X 1238i II?
The T08 toner is rated at approximately 11,000 pages according to the ISO/IEC 19752 standard. At 2,000 pages a month, that is more than five months of printing per cartridge. A toner status tool is provided in the software, and eMaintenance can automatically report the remaining level on a managed fleet.
Does the X 1238i II's document feeder read both sides in a single pass?
Yes, it is a 50-sheet dual-scan document feeder. In black and white at 300 × 600 dpi, allow for 70 images per minute on a double-sided original compared with 38 for single-sided: scanning both sides is therefore faster than processing them separately.
Does the X 1238i II's scanner scan in colour?
Yes, in 24-bit, even though printing is monochrome. Allow for 13 images per minute in single-sided colour and 26 in duplex, compared with 38 and 70 in black and white. Optical resolution reaches 600 × 600 dpi, and the drivers cover TWAIN, WIA and ICA.
Is encrypted PDF available out of the box on the X 1238i II?
No, it requires an accessory: the PDF Security Feature Set-E1 unlocks encrypted PDF and digitally signed PDF. Without it, scanning produces TIFF, JPEG, PDF, compact PDF and searchable PDF — the kind you can search for a word — sent to e-mail, a PC, a USB flash drive or FTP.
Does the X 1238i II fax?
No telephone fax: the machine handles printing, copying and scanning. It does, however, support Internet fax, via SMTP for sending and POP3 for receiving, which carries documents over the network rather than over a dedicated line.
Can the X 1238i II's paper capacity be increased?
Yes, the AH1 Cassette Feeding Module adds a 550-sheet cassette and brings total input to 950 sheets, document feeder included. As standard, allow for a 250-sheet cassette and a 100-sheet multi-purpose tray. Output tops out at 150 sheets.
Does the X 1238i II's automatic duplex printing cover all paper sizes?
No. It covers A4, Legal, Letter and the OFFICIO, GLGL and Foolscap sizes, but stops at a minimum size of 210 × 279.4 mm: A5 and A6 remain single-sided only. The accepted paper weight ranges from 60 to 120 g/m², which excludes the heavy paper of the multi-purpose tray, accepted up to 163 g/m² for single-sided printing only.
Can you print barcodes with the X 1238i II?
Yes, with the Barcode Printing Kit-E1E, sold separately: the function is not enabled out of the box. For a shipping or stock management station, it is the accessory to plan for from the start. MiCard Multi and MiCard Plus card readers are also available to identify users.
Can you print from Google Drive or OneDrive on the X 1238i II?
Yes, cloud connectivity is built in: Dropbox, Google Drive and OneDrive can be accessed from the 12.7 cm colour touchscreen, for printing as well as scanning. A subscription to the service concerned is still required. Printing from a USB flash drive is also supported, in JPEG, TIFF and PDF.
Which papers do the cassette and the multi-purpose tray accept?
The 250-sheet cassette takes 60 to 120 g/m²; the 100-sheet multi-purpose tray goes up to 163 g/m² and alone takes COM10, Monarch, C5 and DL envelopes, index cards, postcards and custom sizes from 76.2 × 127 mm. Print margins are 5 mm, increased to 10 mm on envelopes.
What real-world duplex speed can you expect from the X 1238i II?
31.9 pages per minute in A4 duplex, compared with 38 single-sided — and up to 63.1 ppm in A5 landscape. The first page comes out in 5.5 seconds and the machine is ready 14 seconds after power-on. For copying, allow for 6.4 seconds from the glass and 6.6 from the feeder.
Will the X 1238i II fit on a desk, and is it noisy?
453 × 464 × 392 mm for 16.2 kg without toner: it sits on a worktop. Sound pressure is 53 dB(A) in operation and the device is rated as inaudible in standby. Still, allow 682 × 1,083 mm of clear space for opening the covers fully.
What monthly volume is the Canon i-SENSYS X 1238i II designed for?
The recommended range is 750 to 4,000 pages per month, for a maximum duty cycle of 80,000 pages. On the electrical side, allow for 1,370 W at peak, 9.4 W in standby and 0.9 W in sleep mode. The dual 800 MHz processor and 1 GB of memory handle heavy documents without slowing down the queue.
Which operating systems does the X 1238i II support, and what warranty covers the device?
Windows 8.1 to 11, Server editions from 2008 to 2019, macOS 10.11 and later, as well as Linux. The UFRII, PCL 6 and Adobe PostScript 3 languages are supplied; PCL 5e is recognised, but without a dedicated Canon driver. The device is new and covered by a 1-year warranty, with the invoice serving as the warranty document.
