Does the DS725+ NAS come with drives?
The drives need to be purchased separately. The two bays take 3.5-inch SATA HDDs or 2.5-inch SATA SSDs, and the M.2 slots take 2280 NVMe SSDs. Synology requires them to be chosen from its compatibility list: check it before buying your drives.
Can the DS725+ memory be upgraded, and by how much?
Yes: it has 2 memory slots, only one of which is occupied by the supplied 4 GB DDR4 ECC SODIMM module, for a maximum of 32 GB (2 × 16 GB). Note: Synology no longer fully guarantees the product or technical support if the added modules are not Synology-branded. Upgrading to 32 GB is also required to create volumes larger than 108 TB.
Do the two M.2 slots take up a drive bay?
No. The 2 M.2 2280 NVMe SSD slots are independent of the bays: they serve as a read/write SSD cache, or as a storage pool in their own right with Synology-verified SSDs. The only limitation: these slots do not support hot-swapping.
Which RAID levels can you create with only 2 bays?
With the two internal bays: Synology Hybrid RAID, Basic, JBOD, RAID 0 and RAID 1. RAID 5, 6 and 10 only become available with the expansion unit. To protect yourself against a drive failure, RAID 1 or SHR is enough from the basic configuration. Volumes can be formatted in either Btrfs or ext4.
What can you do when the 2 bays are full?
You add the Synology DX525 expansion unit, sold separately, which brings the total to 7 drives and up to 140 TB raw (calculated with 20 TB drives), compared with 40 TB on the two bays alone. The dedicated expansion port is already on the back, and moving to 7 drives unlocks RAID 5, 6 and 10.
How many network ports are there, and what throughput can you realistically expect?
Two ports: one 2.5GbE RJ-45 and one 1GbE RJ-45, with failover support if one goes down. In sequential throughput, Synology measures up to 276 MB/s read and 224 MB/s write: it is the 2.5GbE port you need to cable, connected to a 2.5GbE switch or router.
Can a failed drive be replaced without shutting down the NAS?
Yes for the two bays, which support hot-swapping: the trays slide out from the front, with a lock and status indicators. Hot-swapping is, however, not supported on the M.2 SSD slots: replacing those means shutting the machine down.
Is it quiet and compact enough to stay in an office?
Yes: 17.9 dB in operation, in an enclosure measuring 166 × 106 × 223 mm and weighing 1.51 kg empty, cooled by a single 92 mm fan. It tolerates 0 to 40 °C and up to 80% humidity, which leaves some leeway in a room without air conditioning.
Are additional licences needed to back up the company's computers?
No. Active Backup Suite (Windows and Linux computers, virtual machines, SaaS applications), Hyper Backup and Snapshot Replication are provided licence-free with DSM. Hyper Backup targets an external drive, another NAS or the cloud, with deduplication and versioning; snapshots can be made immutable.
How many surveillance cameras can be connected, and is there a charge?
Two camera licences are included with Surveillance Station; beyond that, each additional camera requires a licence. The DS725+ is rated to manage up to 40 IP cameras, chosen from more than 8,700 supported models, with ONVIF compatibility. Recordings are stored locally, with no mandatory subscription.
What protection is there for access from outside?
Remote access is via QuickConnect from a simple browser, and adaptive multi-factor authentication is triggered automatically on suspicious external logins. On top of that come a firewall, encrypted shared folders, SFTP, Let's Encrypt and a hardware encryption engine.
How many users and shared folders can it manage?
Up to 512 local user accounts, 128 groups and 128 shared folders, with a maximum of 30 concurrent SMB connections. It supports SMB, AFP, NFS, FTP, WebDAV and Rsync, and handles Windows ACLs. Five MailPlus e-mail accounts are also included so you can host your own mail server.
Can it be plugged directly into the Moroccan mains supply?
Yes: the power supply accepts 100 to 240 V at 50/60 Hz single-phase, so local 220 V works without a transformer. The enclosure also has a Kensington security slot, a USB 3.2 Gen 1 port and a reset button on the back.
How long is the warranty on the Synology DS725+?
3 years, with your invoice serving as proof. The NAS is new, genuine and sealed in its original packaging. Full specifications are available in the Synology datasheet (PDF).
