The ATH-M50xBT2 is the second generation of the M-Series wireless headphones. It keeps the sound signature of the ATH-M50x studio headphones and their 45 mm drivers, and adds a dedicated DAC and headphone amplifier, the LDAC codec, two mics for calls and 50 hours of battery life.

A complete audio chain inside the earcup

The Bluetooth signal does not go through a generic circuit: an AK4331 digital-to-analogue converter and a dedicated headphone amplifier drive the 45 mm large-aperture drivers. The response runs from 15 to 28,000 Hz, with the deep, accurate bass response of the ATH-M50x. With an LDAC-compatible phone, the band transmitted over Bluetooth reaches 40,000 Hz at 96 kHz; the AAC and SBC codecs cover other devices.

Calls that come through clearly

Two omnidirectional MEMS mics and a beamforming technique isolate the voice from the surrounding noise. During a call, you hear yourself speak in the headphones, which makes the conversation more natural, and a button mutes the mic with a single press. The earcup buttons also handle volume, playback and the phone's voice assistant, Siri or Google Assistant.

Fifty hours, and three more in ten minutes

A full charge, of about three and a half hours through the USB-C port, gives up to 50 hours of continuous playback. Ten minutes of charging is enough for three hours of listening. Without battery, the supplied 1.2 m 3.5 mm mini-jack cable, with an L-shaped plug, turns the headphones into a wired model; the buttons and the mic are then inactive.

Two devices, one pair of headphones

Multipoint pairing keeps two devices connected at the same time, for example the phone and the laptop. Google Fast Pair speeds up the first pairing on Android. The Audio-Technica Connect app adds the rest: low latency mode for games and videos, an equaliser saved in the headphones, left-right balance, choice of voice assistant and codec.

The earcups swivel and the headband folds to slip the headphones into the supplied protective pouch, with the audio cable and the 30 cm USB-A to USB-C charging cable. The ear pads and headband are made of professional-grade materials, built to last.

The supplied audio cable has no mic: to make calls, stay on Bluetooth. When wired, set the volume on the source device, as the headphone buttons no longer respond.
