Frequently asked questions about this product

Does the imageRUNNER 2224N have an automatic document feeder?
No, not as standard. It comes with a platen cover: each original is placed by hand, one sheet after another. The 50-sheet DADF-AY2 duplex feeder is available as an option and fits this model — it is the first accessory to plan for if you copy entire files. Once fitted, it raises the machine from 502 to 606 mm in height.
Is automatic duplex printing included on this model?
No. The E1 duplex unit is an option designed for the 2224N; without it, the stack has to be fed back in by hand to print the reverse side. Once fitted, it brings duplex printing to 16.7 pages per minute in A4 and 7.5 in A3, versus 24 and 12 single-sided, and accepts paper weights from 60 to 90 g/m².
Can it scan to email or to a network folder?
This send function is available as an option on the 2224N: the send kit unlocks scanning to SMTP and to an SMB 3.0 share, with an address book of 50 LDAP entries and 300 local entries. In the standard configuration, scanning goes to a computer via ScanGear, in TWAIN or WIA, on Windows 8.1 to 11 as well as macOS 10.12 and later.
How many pages does the C-EXV 42 toner last on the 2224N?
Approximately 10,200 A4 pages at 5% coverage — the benchmark for an ordinary letter; a dense document will lower this figure. The drum has the same C-EXV 42 reference but is a separate part: it is replaced independently of the toner, according to its own wear rate. Two distinct consumables, then, and two different replacement intervals.
Is the network connection Gigabit on the imageRUNNER 2224N?
No, the network port is 100Base-TX/10Base-T, complemented by 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi. This speed easily handles monochrome office work, but batch scanning to a server will be slower than on a machine wired for Gigabit. Mobile printing is supported via AirPrint, Mopria, Canon PRINT Business and Canon Print Service.
Can you copy an ID card or a passport on the 2224N?
Yes, there are two dedicated modes: ID card copy and passport copy, which put both sides on a single page. There are also N-up, frame erase to remove binding shadows, sorting, density adjustment over 9 levels, up to 999 copies and zoom from 25 to 400% in 1% steps.
Does the 2224N really print and scan in A3?
Yes, both ways. It prints up to A3 from the cassette as well as from the multipurpose tray, and the glass accepts an original of 297 × 432 mm. Expect 12 pages per minute in A3 versus 24 in A4: the large format halves the speed. The detail does not change — up to 1,200 × 1,200 dpi for printing, 600 × 600 dpi for copying.
Which papers can go through the multipurpose tray of the 2224N?
From 60 to 157 g/m²: thin, plain, recycled, heavy, colour, bond, transparency, label, pre-punched and COM10, Monarch, DL and ISO-C5 envelopes, plus custom sizes from 95 × 148 to 297 × 431.8 mm. The cassettes are limited to 64-90 g/m² and plain paper; the optional duplex unit stops at 90 g/m².
How many sheets can be loaded into the imageRUNNER 2224N?
350 sheets as standard, increased to 600 with the AK1 cassette feeding module, which adds 250 sheets up to A3 size, weighs 5.8 kg and is powered from the main unit. The output remains limited to 250 sheets whatever the configuration: on a long run, the tray has to be emptied along the way.
Can fax be added to the 2224N later?
No. Fax is reserved for the 2224iF version of the series: it is available neither as standard nor as an option on the 2224N, and no board can add it afterwards. If sending faxes is part of your daily routine, it is the other version of the series you should choose at the time of purchase rather than counting on an upgrade.
How long does it take to start up, and how much power does it use?
13 seconds or less from power-on to be ready to copy, and 4.3 seconds to recover from sleep mode — there is no quick start mode on this series. As for electricity: 1,500 W at peak, 15.5 W in standby and 0.9 W in sleep mode. Sound pressure reaches 55 dB(A) during operation, in a room between 10 and 30 °C.
Is the 2224N's 3.5-inch touchscreen in colour?
No, it is monochrome. This 8.9 cm panel is enough for copy and scan settings, but is more basic than a colour screen for browsing an address book. The machine can otherwise be managed remotely through its web interface, encrypted with TLS 1.3, and runs on a 1.6 GHz dual-core processor with 1 GB of RAM.
What warranty covers the imageRUNNER 2224N?
1 year, with the invoice serving as the warranty document, on a new machine weighing 31.6 kg without toner. The machine verifies the integrity of its software at every start-up, in line with the NIST SP800-193 recommendation. All the specifications of the series are in the manufacturer's documentation.
