Does the HPE OfficeConnect 1420 8G need configuring?
No: it is an unmanaged, fully automatic switch. No settings to make and no maintenance to plan: it provides Layer 2 switching in a single-tier network, with no VLANs to declare.
Does this switch need an external power adapter?
No: the power supply is inside the case, at 100-240 V. A simple power cable is all it takes, with no adapter trailing behind the furniture or in the rack.
Is this switch noisy in an office?
No: it runs without a fan, and therefore silently, drawing 4.5 W maximum. It can sit on a desk or in a meeting room without anyone hearing it.
Where are the ports and indicators on this model?
The 8 Gigabit ports are at the back, the LED indicators on the front. This is practical on a desk: the cables run towards the wall while the status, activity and speed of each port remain visible from the front.
What performance does the 1420 8G offer?
16 Gbps switching capacity and up to 11.8 Mpps, with latency below 3 µs at 100 Mbps and below 2.6 µs at Gigabit, and 1.5 Mb of buffer memory. All eight ports work at the same time without a bottleneck.
How is voice and video traffic handled?
Through 802.1p quality of service and full-duplex flow control, both automatic. Automatic half- or full-duplex negotiation on each port also doubles the port's effective throughput.
Can this switch power devices over PoE?
No, this model does not supply power over its ports. The 1420 range includes PoE+ versions for powering IP phones, Wi-Fi access points or cameras, but the 1420 8G is not one of them.
Can this switch be rack-mounted?
Yes: it can be installed on a desk or in a rack, as you prefer. The case measures 15.77 × 10.49 × 2.69 cm and weighs 500 g, which makes it an unobtrusive model in a patch cabinet.
Is the switch new and covered by a warranty?
Yes, new equipment, with the invoice serving as the warranty document. The manufacturer's documentation is available in the datasheet for the 1420 8G (JH329A).
