What is in the GWN7605 box and how is it powered?
It contains the access point, the wall or ceiling mounting kits and the quick start guide. Power comes over the network cable, via 802.3af PoE or 802.3at PoE+: you therefore need a PoE switch or an injector, to be provided separately. The access point detects the PoE type on its own. A single network cable then carries both data and power.
What is its power consumption, and is an entry-level PoE switch enough?
10.16 W at most. A standard 802.3af port is enough to power it: the access point accepts both PoE and PoE+ and automatically adapts its power according to what it detects on the cable. Power consumption therefore stays modest for an access point that is always on, and only one switch port is used.
Can it be installed outdoors, under a covered walkway or in an equipment room?
It is designed for indoor use: 0 to 40 °C in operation, 10 to 90% non-condensing humidity, and indoor wall or ceiling mounting kits. An area exposed to rain or intense heat falls outside this operating range. Opt for a false ceiling, a corridor or a room: the supplied kits are all you need for mounting.
How many separate Wi-Fi networks can be created on the GWN7605?
16 SSIDs in total, 8 per radio: 8 on 2.4 GHz and 8 on 5 GHz. Enough to separate the staff network, the guest network — with a captive portal — and the one for checkouts or cameras, each on its own 802.1Q VLAN.
Is it sized for a meeting room or a full restaurant?
It handles more than 100 simultaneous Wi-Fi devices, with dual-band 2×2:2 MU-MIMO and beamforming, which directs the signal towards each client rather than broadcasting it blindly. Advanced QoS protects real-time applications when the room is full. Aggregate throughput reaches 1.27 Gbps, i.e. 300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz and 867 Mbps on 5 GHz.
What does the advertised 165-metre range mean in practice?
It is a maximum that depends on the environment: load-bearing walls, partitions and interference reduce it markedly. The signal comes from 2 internal 3 dBi dual-band antennas, with a transmit power of 24 dBm on 2.4 GHz and 22 dBm on 5 GHz. As these antennas are built into the housing, there is nothing to aim or screw on during installation.
How can coverage be extended to a room that no cable reaches?
With a mesh network: a second GWN access point links to the cabled one over Wi-Fi and relays the coverage. It still needs a PoE power supply on site, but no longer a network cable back to the switch.
Do you have to pay for a controller or a subscription to manage several access points?
No. The controller is built into the access point's web interface and manages up to 50 local GWN access points. Beyond that, GWN.Cloud is a free cloud platform with no limit on the number of access points, and GWN Manager installs on your server for up to 3,000 access points. So there is no separate controller unit to buy.
What level of Wi-Fi security does the GWN7605 offer?
It supports WPA3, as well as WPA/WPA2-PSK and WPA/WPA2 Enterprise (TKIP/AES) with 802.1x. On top of this come an anti-hacking secure boot validated by digital signatures, a unique security certificate and a random default password specific to each device.
How can you stop the access point from being taken down in a shop open to the public?
The housing has a Kensington lock slot, and resetting is done via a pinhole, which cannot be triggered by accident. Three tri-colour LEDs show the device's status without anyone needing to touch it. The housing weighs only 388 g and mounts on the wall or ceiling with the supplied kits.
How much space does it take up once mounted on the ceiling?
180.4 × 180.4 × 40.8 mm for only 388 g: a square less than 18 cm across, which goes unnoticed on a false-ceiling tile or mounted on a wall. The complete package weighs 719 g. Only the network cable connects it to the switch: no electrical outlet or power adapter to fit in alongside.
Is the Grandstream GWN7605 access point new and under warranty?
Yes: new equipment, sealed in its original packaging, supplied with the invoice that serves as the 1-year warranty document. It holds FCC, CE, RCM and IC certifications. All the detailed measurements are in the manufacturer's datasheet (PDF).
