Is a basic PoE switch enough for the U6 Pro?
Yes: its power consumption peaks at 13 W, below the 15.4 W of an 802.3af port, with an input voltage of 44 to 57 V DC. An entry-level PoE switch will therefore do, with no need for PoE+.
How are the U6 Pro's 6 spatial streams distributed?
4×4 MU-MIMO on the 5 GHz band and 2×2 on 2.4 GHz. This is what allows it to be rated for more than 350 devices over 140 m², with 4.8 Gbps on the 5 GHz band using 160 MHz channels.
Does the U6 Pro's Gigabit port hold back its 4.8 Gbps?
The access point has only one Gigabit RJ45 port: traffic to the wired network therefore tops out at 1 Gbps, whatever the wireless speed. In practice, no single client device comes close to 4.8 Gbps, but it is worth knowing if you are aiming for a higher wired throughput.
Is the U6 Pro resistant to dust and moisture?
It carries an IP54 rating: protected against dust and splashing water, it can handle a warehouse, a storeroom or a comms room. Its operating range is -30 to 60 °C. For direct exposure to rain, an outdoor model is still the right choice.
Is the mounting bracket supplied with the U6 Pro?
Yes, the Pro mount is included, for ceiling or wall mounting. The housing is just 197 mm in diameter and 35 mm thick, and weighs 580 g — 720 g once mounted: discreet on a suspended ceiling tile.
Can each user be given a different Wi-Fi password?
Yes, thanks to PPSK — private pre-shared key: a single network accepts several passwords, each identifying a user or a device. Revoking one person's access then does not force anyone else to change their key.
How do you set up controlled guest access on the U6 Pro?
The captive portal can be customised in your colours and accepts authentication by access vouchers, by password, by online payment or via an external server. The guest network is isolated, and devices can also be isolated from one another.
Does the U6 Pro integrate with enterprise RADIUS authentication?
Yes, with dynamic VLAN assignment by RADIUS and support for RadSec, which encrypts communication with the authentication server using TLS. Passpoint is also supported for automatic connection of recognised devices.
How many Wi-Fi networks can this access point broadcast?
8 networks per radio, i.e. up to 16 across both bands. Each can be given its own bandwidth cap and schedule — so you can switch off the guest network outside opening hours.
Does the connection stay stable when moving between UniFi access points?
Yes: 802.11r fast roaming, 802.11v transition management and 802.11k radio resource measurement switch the device to the best access point without re-authentication. Band steering also directs compatible devices to the 5 GHz band.
Can you add an access point where no network cable reaches?
Yes, wireless meshing lets an access point connect to the network over the air. It still needs power on site, but no cable has to be run to it: handy for covering an annex or an isolated room.
Is the equipment new and covered by a warranty?
Yes, new equipment, with the invoice serving as the warranty document for one year. The access point is NDAA-compliant, a point required by some public tenders.
