Is the mounting kit supplied with the Aruba AP-505?
No. A bracket does come pre-installed on the back of the access point, but it is used to attach it to a mounting kit sold separately — ceiling rail, wall or enclosure. The power supply is also sold separately: AC adapter or PoE switch, depending on your installation.
What happens if the AP-505 is powered by 802.3af PoE?
There are two cases. With IPM power monitoring disabled, the access point shuts off its USB port. With IPM enabled, it starts without restrictions and only applies them if the PoE budget shrinks. On 802.3at or on an AC adapter, it runs with no limitations at all.
What is the actual power consumption of the AP-505 depending on its power source?
In the worst case, without and then with a USB device connected: 11 W and 16.5 W on 802.3at PoE+, 11 W and 13.5 W on 802.3af PoE, 8.9 W and 14.2 W on an AC adapter. When idle, it drops to 6.2 W on PoE, and to 3.7 W in deep sleep mode.
What real-world throughput can you expect from the AP-505 compared with the advertised figures?
The combined theoretical data rate reaches 1.77 Gbps, but the figure to remember is the maximum real-world aggregate throughput of 1.49 Gbps with HE80 and HE20 channels: 1.2 Gbps on the 5 GHz band and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, with two spatial streams.
How many devices can the AP-505 handle at the same time?
Up to 256 associated devices per radio, or 512 in total across both bands, and 16 Wi-Fi networks per radio. It is sized for a school, a medium-sized office or a retail space.
Are the AP-505's antennas internal or external?
Internal: two downtilt omnidirectional dual-band antennas, rated at 4.9 dBi on 2.4 GHz and 5.7 dBi on 5 GHz. They are optimised for horizontal ceiling mounting, with a downtilt angle of about 30° — so wall mounting deflects the main lobe.
Can the AP-505 act as a gateway for IoT devices?
Yes, it has a built-in Bluetooth 5 and 802.15.4 (Zigbee) radio with its own antenna, and a USB 2.0 Type-A port that can supply 1 A / 5 W to an external module. Sensors, asset tracking tags and location services work without an additional gateway.
Do you need an Aruba controller to deploy the AP-505?
No: the access point can be deployed in Instant mode, without a controller, managed from Aruba Central in the cloud, or connected to a mobility controller. The choice is made at installation, with no change of hardware.
How does the AP-505 deal with devices that stay latched onto a distant access point?
With ClientMatch: the access point measures the available bandwidth, the application type and the traffic, then steers the device to the best access point, even while it is on the move. The mechanism works for Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 5 devices alike.
How good are the AP-505's security features?
It supports WPA3 and Enhanced Open, which automatically encrypts each session on an open guest network. WPA2-MPSK allows one key per device, with ClearPass Policy Manager, and a TPM module stores credentials, keys and boot code separately from the system.
Does the AP-505 withstand interference from a nearby mobile network?
Yes, advanced cellular coexistence (ACC) applies built-in filtering that reduces the impact of mobile networks, distributed antenna systems and small cells installed nearby. Useful in a building fitted with an indoor cellular repeater.
Can the AP-505 be used for a remote worker or a branch office?
Yes, in remote access point mode: the access point sets up an SSL or IPsec VPN tunnel to a mobility controller acting as a concentrator. The remote workstation is then on the company network, with the same access rules as at head office.
How much space does the AP-505 take up, and what connectors does it have?
160 × 161 × 37 mm and 500 g. In terms of connectivity: one 10/100/1000 auto-sensing Ethernet port with 802.3az support (Energy-Efficient Ethernet), a 12 V DC input, a USB port, a serial console on a micro-B connector, two multicolour LEDs and a Kensington lock slot.
