Three radio chains instead of two on the 5 GHz band, with three 5 dBi internal antennas, while the 2.4 GHz band stays at 2×2. The data rate there reaches 2,402 Mbps, and range benefits from XTRA Range technology and beamforming.
Is a basic PoE switch enough for the GWN7660E?
Yes: its power consumption peaks at 12.95 W, below the 15.4 W of an 802.3af port. The access point automatically detects whether it is connected to PoE or PoE+ and adjusts its power, with no configuration.
How realistic is the advertised 175-metre range?
This is an open-field range, achieved with XTRA Range and beamforming, which focuses the signal towards each device. In partitioned offices it drops sharply: plan in terms of access points per floor rather than metres.
How many devices can the GWN7660E serve at the same time?
256 concurrent Wi-Fi clients, for a combined data rate of 3 Gbps. That is the capacity of a busy open-plan office, a conference room or a hotel lobby.
Do you need 160 MHz channels to reach the 2,402 Mbps?
Yes. The 5 GHz band accepts 20, 40, 80 or 160 MHz channels, and the maximum data rate is reached at 160 MHz, with a client device able to keep up. The 2.4 GHz band is limited to 20 or 40 MHz.
Is the single Gigabit port a bottleneck?
The radios add up to 3 Gbps, but all traffic to the wired network goes through a single Gigabit port. In everyday use — web, files and video conferencing spread across dozens of workstations — the limit is not felt; it would matter for a single transfer saturating the radio.
Do you need a hardware controller to manage several GWN7660E units?
No. A controller is built into the web interface of the access point and manages up to 50 local GWN access points, with no licence. GWN.Cloud manages an unlimited number of devices free of charge, and GWN Manager, on your own servers, scales up to 3,000 access points.
Does the GWN7660E support WPA3?
Yes, in addition to WPA2-PSK and WPA/WPA2 Enterprise with TKIP or AES. The hardware boots from digitally signed firmware, and each access point leaves the factory with its own certificate and its own unique random password.
How many Wi-Fi networks can you create on the GWN7660E?
32 SSIDs in total, 16 per band, with 802.1Q VLAN tagging, 802.1x authentication and a captive portal for visitors. Enough to separate staff, guests and IoT devices on a single access point.
