What is the yield of the toner supplied with the HP LaserJet M442dn?
It is a starter toner of approximately 4,000 pages, not the full cartridge. The standard 335A replacement lasts approximately 7,400 pages and the high-capacity 335X version approximately 13,700 pages. All three yields are measured according to the ISO/IEC 19752 standard.
Is the drum replaced separately on the M442dn?
Yes, they are two separate parts. The 57A imaging drum (CF257A) is rated for approximately 80,000 pages, or about ten standard toners. A genuine drum is already in place when the machine is first set up, alongside the starter toner.
Does the HP LaserJet M442dn print duplex automatically?
Yes, as standard — that is what the “d” in the model name indicates. The machine prints the reverse side without any intervention. Supported sizes range from A3 to A6, including B4, B5 (JIS), 8K, 16K and Oficio 216 × 340 mm, on paper weights from 60 to 163 g/m² in tray 1 and from 60 to 110 g/m² in tray 2.
Can a document feeder be added to the M442dn?
Yes, but not by yourself. A 100-sheet reversing document feeder, able to scan both sides, is available as an option for this “dn” version — it must be installed by an HP authorised service provider. Without it, each original is placed on the glass.
Where can the M442dn scan to?
To email (SMTP over SSL), a shared SMB folder, an FTP server, a computer and a WSD service — all from the control panel, without going through a workstation. Files are produced at 600 dpi optical, from originals up to A3 size.
Does a USB cable come with the HP LaserJet M442dn?
Yes, the box contains a USB cable, along with the printer, the power cord, the toner cartridge and the manual. Connecting it directly to a computer therefore requires no additional purchase; an Ethernet cable is still needed if the machine is to be shared on the network.
Does the M442dn have Wi-Fi?
No. It connects via 10/100Base-TX Ethernet or Hi-Speed USB 2.0. Once connected to the wired network, it can be shared between several computers and managed remotely from its embedded web server, which handles encryption and IP address filtering.
Does the M442dn really scan in A3?
Yes, the glass accepts an original of 297 × 432 mm, i.e. full A3. That is the main advantage of this machine over an A4 model: copying a plan, a register or a newspaper without folding it. The optical resolution reaches 600 dpi, and the print area goes up to the same size.
Can you print on envelopes with the M442dn?
Envelopes are specified for occasional use only, and transparencies are not supported. Tray 1 accepts 60 to 163 g/m² and custom sizes from 98 × 148 to 297 × 432 mm; tray 2 is limited to 60-110 g/m². For regular mailings, this is not the right machine.
How many sheets can the M442dn hold?
350 sheets: a 100-sheet universal tray 1 and a second 250-sheet tray. These are the machine's only two trays, as no input or output expansion is offered in the catalogue, and the output tray holds up to 250 sheets. The machine has 512 MB of memory and a 4-line LCD display with a numeric keypad.
What monthly volume can the HP LaserJet M442dn handle?
The recommended volume is 2,000 to 5,000 pages per month, with a maximum duty cycle of 50,000 pages. The first figure is the one on which service life and consumable replacement intervals are based; the ceiling is only used to compare the robustness of machines with one another.
Can a non-HP compatible toner be used in the M442dn?
It is equipped with HP Dynamic Security: it works with cartridges that have a new or reused HP chip, and cartridges with a non-HP chip may not work. Firmware updates maintain this blocking and can disable a cartridge that was working until then.
Is the M442dn heavy, and how much power does it use?
25.4 kg including consumables, for 560 × 540 × 417 mm when closed: it is a machine to place on the floor or on sturdy furniture. It uses 580 W when printing and 80 W when ready, with a sound pressure of 51 dB(A).
