Why does the GWN7662 have a 2.5 Gbps port?
Because its 5 GHz radio reaches 4,804 Mbps: a Gigabit port would become the bottleneck. The access point therefore has a 2.5 Gbps port and a second Gigabit port, the latter able to serve a nearby wired device.
What difference does the 4x4 on the GWN7662's 5 GHz band make?
Four radio chains on the 5 GHz band — versus two on 2.4 GHz — served by six internal antennas. Combined with downlink and uplink OFDMA, this makes it possible to serve 256 devices without making them wait.
Is a basic PoE switch enough for the GWN7662?
Its power consumption reaches 16 W, slightly more than the 15.4 W of an 802.3af port: plan for an 802.3at PoE+ port to get full power. The access point detects the power type on its own and supports the 802.3az energy-saving standard.
Do you need 160 MHz channels to reach 4,804 Mbps?
Yes. The 5 GHz band supports 20, 40, 80 or 160 MHz channels, and it is at 160 MHz, with all four spatial streams, that this data rate is reached. The 2.4 GHz band is limited to 20 or 40 MHz, for 573.5 Mbps.
Do you need a hardware controller to manage several GWN7662 units?
No. A controller is built into the web interface of the access point and manages up to 50 access points of the GWN range locally, with no server or licence. GWN.Cloud manages an unlimited number of devices free of charge, and GWN Manager scales up to 3,000 access points on your own servers.
How many Wi-Fi networks can you create on the GWN7662?
32 SSIDs in total, 16 per band, with 802.1Q VLAN tagging, 802.1x authentication and a captive portal. Enough to separate staff, visitors and IoT devices on a single access point.
Does the GWN7662 support WPA3?
Yes, in addition to WPA2-PSK and WPA/WPA2 Enterprise. The hardware boots on digitally signed firmware, and each access point leaves the factory with its own certificate and its own random password.
Can the GWN7662 cope with an unheated room?
Its operating range runs from -10 to 45 °C, with 5 to 95% non-condensing humidity. Ten degrees below zero allows installation in a storeroom, an unheated corridor or a stairwell, which few indoor access points allow.
What is in the box, and where does the GWN7662 mount?
The access point, wall and ceiling mounting kits and the installation guide. The enclosure measures 205.3 mm per side by 45.9 mm and weighs 540 g, with three tri-colour LEDs and a Kensington lock slot against theft.
What is the advertised 175-metre range worth in practice?
It is an open-field range, greatly reduced as soon as a wall gets in the way. In partitioned offices, think in terms of access points per floor rather than metres, and check coverage on site before finalising the layout.
Can you add an access point where no cable reaches?
Yes, GWN access points form a mesh network: an additional access point connects wirelessly to the cabled one. It must still be powered on site, but no network cable needs to be run to it.
Is the equipment new and under warranty?
