Do you need to buy a controller or a subscription to manage several GWN7630 units?
No. The controller is built into the web interface of the access point and manages up to 50 GWN access points on the local network. Beyond that, GWN.Cloud is a free cloud platform with no limit on the number of access points, and GWN Manager installs on your own server. So there is no separate controller appliance to buy, whatever the number of access points.
What is in the GWN7630 box and how is it powered?
The box contains the access point, the wall or ceiling mounting kits and the quick start guide. Power comes through the network cable, via PoE 802.3af or PoE+ 802.3at: you will need a PoE switch or an injector, sold separately. The access point detects the PoE type on its own and adjusts its power, 16.5 W at most. A single cable then carries both data and power.
Can this access point be installed outdoors or in a room without air conditioning?
It is designed for indoor use: 0 to 40 °C in operation and 10 to 90% humidity, non-condensing, with indoor wall or ceiling mounting kits. A terrace or an overheated technical room falls outside this operating range. Choose a suspended ceiling, a corridor or an office instead, where the access point mounts with the kits supplied.
What does the advertised 175-metre range really correspond to?
It is a maximum range in open conditions, which varies with the environment: walls, partitions and interference reduce it. It relies on 4 internal dual-band antennas (4 dBi gain on 2.4 GHz, 5 dBi on 5 GHz) and a transmit power of 27 dBm on 2.4 GHz and 25 dBm on 5 GHz. As these antennas are built into the housing, there is nothing to aim or screw on during installation.
How can you cover an extra floor without running a network cable?
The GWN7630 supports mesh networking: an additional access point connects over Wi-Fi to the wired one and extends the coverage. It still needs PoE power on site, but no longer an Ethernet link back to the switch.
What difference does 4×4:4 MU-MIMO make when the whole office connects?
4×4:4 MU-MIMO serves several devices in parallel instead of making each one wait its turn. The access point handles more than 200 concurrent clients for an aggregate throughput of 2.33 Gbps (600 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, 1,733 Mbps on 5 GHz). On the wired side, it has 2 auto-sensing Gigabit Ethernet ports.
Can you set up a guest Wi-Fi separate from the company network?
Yes. The access point supports multiple SSIDs, 802.1Q VLAN tagging and a captive portal for welcoming visitors. For encryption, it supports WPA3, WPA/WPA2-PSK and WPA/WPA2 Enterprise with 802.1x authentication for staff devices. Each radio has its own SSIDs, on 2.4 GHz as well as 5 GHz.
Is this access point suitable for Wi-Fi telephony?
Yes, it is even one of its preferred uses: advanced QoS (802.11e/WMM, VLAN, ToS) for low-latency real-time applications, and a link designed for Grandstream Wi-Fi IP phones. It is built for medium- to high-density deployments: multi-storey offices, branches, retail sites.
How can the access point be secured in a corridor or an area open to the public?
It has a Kensington lock slot and a pinhole reset button that cannot be triggered by accident. The firmware adds a digitally signed anti-hacking secure boot, a unique security certificate and a random default password specific to each device.
What is its power consumption and what PoE budget should be allowed for on the switch?
16.5 W at most, to be reserved in the switch's PoE budget. The access point supports the 802.3az energy-efficiency standard and automatically adjusts its power depending on whether it detects PoE or PoE+. Allow one PoE port per access point: it is the only cable to run, with data and power travelling over the same link.
What are its dimensions and weight for ceiling mounting?
The housing measures 205.3 × 205.3 × 45.9 mm and weighs 590 g, or 710 g once the mounting kits are attached, the thickness then increasing to 50.9 mm. That is a square of around twenty centimetres, unobtrusive on a suspended-ceiling tile. Three tri-colour LEDs show its status, which helps locate it on a ceiling with several access points.
Is the Grandstream GWN7630 access point new and under warranty?
Yes: the equipment is new, sealed in its original packaging and supplied with its invoice, which serves as the warranty document for 1 year. The device holds FCC, CE, RCM and IC approvals. Full details are in the manufacturer's datasheet (PDF).
