Can you add memory to this HP EliteBook 840 G11?
Yes, and that sets it apart from many ultraportables: the memory sits in two SO-DIMM slots, only one of which is taken by the 8 GB DDR5-5600 module. You can therefore add a second one, enable dual channel and go up to 64 GB.
What is the Smart Card reader on this EliteBook 840 G11 for?
For signing in with a smart card instead of a password: the card stays in the reader and the session depends on its presence. It is a standard in large companies and public administrations, and a feature that has become rare on a 1.41 kg chassis.
Is the battery in this HP EliteBook 840 G11 easy to replace?
No, the 56 Wh battery is internal and not user-replaceable: it has to be swapped by a service technician, under warranty. HP quotes up to 15 hours 15 minutes of battery life, and fast charging restores 50% in 30 minutes.
Is a 256 GB SSD enough on this EliteBook 840 G11?
It is the limit of this configuration: 256 GB is enough for an operating system, an office suite and documents, but fills up quickly once you store photos, videos or several work environments. An external drive or cloud storage then becomes necessary.
Is this EliteBook 840 G11’s screen suitable for photo work?
No, it is aimed at office work. The 14-inch WUXGA IPS anti-glare panel reaches 300 nits but covers only 45% of the NTSC colour space: the anti-glare finish is welcome near a window, but colour accuracy remains basic.
Does this EliteBook 840 G11 have an Ethernet port?
No, there is no RJ-45 port on this chassis. Wired networking goes through a USB-C adapter or a docking station, which the two Thunderbolt 4 ports power without difficulty. For wireless, the Wi-Fi 6E card opens up the 6 GHz band with a compatible router.
What ports does this HP EliteBook 840 G11 have?
Two Thunderbolt 4 ports at 40 Gbps (DisplayPort 1.4 and charging), two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, one of them for charging, an HDMI 2.1 output, a headphone jack and the Smart Card reader. A standard USB flash drive therefore plugs in without an adapter, and so does an external monitor.
How do you sign in to this EliteBook 840 G11 without a password?
Three methods are available: the fingerprint reader, the 5 MP infrared webcam for face recognition, and the smart card reader. This level of equipment is designed for corporate fleets where authentication is tightly controlled.
Is this EliteBook 840 G11 equipped for video conferencing?
Yes. It combines a Poly Studio audio system with two speakers and discrete amplifiers, dual-array microphones and a 5 MP webcam. The French AZERTY keyboard is backlit and spill-resistant, which is useful on a machine that travels.
