The AT4033a is the "a" version of the AT4033, Audio-Technica's cardioid studio microphone: revised electronics and a better-suspended capsule against handling noise and vibrations. It serves vocals, overheads, woodwinds and guitar amps, in the studio, on stage or in broadcast.

A diaphragm aged before use

The diaphragm is only 2 microns thick and goes through a five-step ageing process: its characteristics stay stable over the years. Without a transformer, the electronics barely distort the low end and follow attacks quickly. Its open, symmetrical body avoids unwanted internal reflections, and a nickel-plated copper shield surrounds the capsule.

A warm sound, a strong presence

A strong forward presence is this microphone's signature: a warm, flattering sound, with the transparency and detail of a condenser. It handles 145 dB SPL at 1 % distortion, 155 dB SPL with the -10 dB pad, with 17 dB SPL of self-noise and a response from 30 Hz to 20 kHz. The 80 Hz high-pass filter, 12 dB per octave, is switched on the body.

A two-layer grille

Two layers of grille surround the capsule, with a thin acoustic foam that tames sibilance and plosives. The AT8449a shock mount, for 5/8"-27 stands, and a protective case are supplied.

The AT4033a requires 48 V phantom power (3.2 mA) on its XLR input. The XLR cable is not included: plan for a balanced 3-pin cable.
