Frequently asked questions about this product

What PoE budget does the TL-SG1218MP offer, and on which ports?
250 W in total, up to 30 W per port, on ports 1 to 16. The other two Gigabit RJ45 ports do not supply power. This budget covers, for example, a dozen IP cameras or a mix of Wi-Fi access points and phones on the same floor.
What happens if my devices exceed 250 W?
Intelligent power management automatically cuts power to lower-priority ports to preserve the priority ports, which prevents the switch from being overloaded. It also detects the power each device requires and protects non-PoE equipment plugged in by mistake.
Do the two SFP slots come in addition to the 16 PoE+ ports?
Yes: the switch has 16 Gigabit PoE+ ports, 2 Gigabit RJ45 ports without PoE and 2 combo Gigabit SFP slots. These slots accept multimode or single-mode fibre in 1000BASE-X, to link the equipment room to the network core.
Can the TL-SG1218MP be configured with VLANs?
No: it is an unmanaged model, with no configuration interface. You plug it in and it works. 802.1p/DSCP quality of service is automatic and puts voice and video ahead of other traffic, with no settings needed.
Is this switch quiet?
No: it has two fans. That is the price of a 250 W PoE budget in a 1U case. Install it in an equipment room or a closed rack rather than in an occupied office.
How much power consumption should you plan for on the UPS?
21.4 W at idle, and up to 286.64 W with 250 W of powered devices, on a 100-240 V 50/60 Hz mains supply. Heat output then rises from 72.97 to 977.44 BTU/h: rack calculations must be made at full load.
Up to what temperature does this switch operate?
From 0 to 50 °C, thanks to the metal case and its carefully designed heat dissipation. It can therefore cope with an unair-conditioned equipment room, where a lot of equipment stops at 40 °C. Storage is permitted from -40 to 70 °C.
What switching capacity does the TL-SG1218MP offer?
36 Gbps, with an 8,000-entry MAC address table, 4.1 Mbit of buffer memory and support for jumbo frames up to 10 KB. 802.3x flow control in full duplex completes the package.
What network cable length does this switch support?
100 m at most per copper segment, using Category 5, 5e, 6 or higher cable for Gigabit. Beyond that, you need to switch to fibre on the SFP slots, or add a second switch in between.
What is in the box of the TL-SG1218MP?
The switch, the power cord, the rackmount kit, the rubber feet and the installation guide. SFP modules are chosen according to the type of fibre and ordered separately. The case also provides for a physical lock.
How much depth does this switch take up in a rack?
440 × 180 × 44 mm, i.e. 1U high and only 18 cm deep: it fits in a shallow wall-mount cabinet as well as in a standard rack, mounting kit included.
Is the switch new and covered by a warranty?
Yes, new equipment, with the invoice serving as the warranty document. Technical details can be found in the TL-SG1218MP datasheet. CE, FCC and RoHS certified.
