Frequently asked questions about this product

Are the 16 PoE+ ports on this switch Gigabit?
No: the 16 powered ports run at 10/100 Mbps. Only the two uplinks are Gigabit, backed by two combo SFP slots. This is the point to check before connecting very high-definition cameras.
What PoE budget does this switch offer?
192 W in total, with up to 30 W per port under 802.3at across the sixteen powered ports. Twelve 15 W cameras fit within the budget; six 30 W motorised cameras already use it up.
How much electrical power does this chassis draw?
217.22 W maximum, including the 192 W of PoE, from a built-in power supply accepting 100 to 240 V. Heat dissipation reaches 741 BTU/h: make sure it goes in a ventilated room, all the more so as the chassis is fitted with two fans.
What are the two combo ports on this model for?
They are the uplinks: each one can be used as Gigabit copper or as SFP fibre, never both at once. This is what lets you connect the camera room to the main building over fibre when the distance exceeds 100 metres.
Can this switch be configured?
No: it is unmanaged, with no interface. It powers devices and switches traffic as soon as it is switched on, with auto MDI/MDI-X and auto-negotiation on every port. The front-panel LEDs show link, PoE and system status.
What performance does this 1U chassis offer, and how much space does it take?
7.2 Gbps switching capacity and 5.36 Mpps, with an 8,000-entry MAC address table, 4.1 MB of buffer and jumbo frames up to 10,000 bytes. The casing measures 440 × 180 × 44 mm and mounts in a 19-inch rack.
Is the switch new and covered by a warranty?
Yes, new equipment, with the invoice serving as the warranty document. This is the TP-Link TL-SL1218MP, CE, FCC and RoHS certified, supplied with its power cord and a network cable.
