What sets this S530 apart from an access switch?
Its role as an aggregation switch: 24 Gigabit access ports, but above all 4 SFP+ uplinks at 10 Gbps, two dedicated stacking ports and dual redundant power supplies. It is the intermediate layer between the floor switches and the network core.
What happens if a power supply fails?
The second one takes over: two plug-in modules work in 1+1 redundancy and can be replaced without interrupting service. The manufacturer even allows AC and DC modules to be mixed, depending on the site's needs.
Does this switch support dynamic routing?
Yes, fully: static routes, RIP v1 and v2, RIPng, OSPF, OSPFv3, IS-IS, IS-ISv6, BGP and BGP4+, with ECMP, VRRP and VRRP6, policy-based routing and routing policies. Enough to carry the routed topology of a campus.
Can several S530 units be stacked?
Yes, with iStack, using two dedicated 10 Gbps stacking ports: several chassis become a single logical switch, with redundancy between members and link aggregation across devices. You add ports by adding a member.
Is this switch suitable for carrying video?
Yes: it supports a wide range of Layer 2 and Layer 3 multicast protocols — PIM SM, PIM DM, PIM SSM and IGMP snooping — which the manufacturer explicitly intends for high-definition video and video conferencing.
What happens if the link to the network core is cut?
The Smart Link feature fails over to a backup link: the switch connects to several aggregation devices over separate links. VRRP, for its part, provides gateway redundancy on routed networks.
What performance does this switch deliver?
176 Gbps switching capacity and 132 Mpps, with a 32,000-entry MAC address table — twice that of a typical access switch. It operates from -5 to +50 °C, which leaves headroom in a comms room without air conditioning.
How are connected devices authenticated?
With 802.1X or MAC address authentication, with dynamic application of user policies — VLAN, quality of service and access control lists. Each workstation receives its rights the moment it connects, with no port-by-port configuration.
How is this switch managed day to day?
Through the HUAWEI eKit app, the web interface, the command line or SNMP. The chassis is in a rack-mountable 1U format: leave the clearance needed for ventilation and for access to the plug-in power modules.
