The DM-7 gathers the seven microphones of an acoustic drum kit: a BD-1 for the kick, four ST-4 for the snare and toms, two OH-2 condensers for the cymbals. Each one gets its own track, and the mix is then set drum by drum.

Every mic has its place on the kit

The BD-1 goes in through the port of the kick drum's front head. The four ST-4 clamp onto the rim of the snare and toms, as close as possible to the head, with no stand. The two OH-2 are mounted as a pair above the kit for the cymbals and the sound of the room. Two useful variations: one OH-2 under the snare, facing the snare wires, or one OH-2 on the hi-hat.

The BD-1 keeps both attack and body

A cardioid dynamic mic with an integrated mount, the BD-1 covers 50 Hz to 15 kHz: the click of the beater and the roundness of the drum both remain clear, with little correction at the mix. It also suits a bass amp.

The ST-4 stay out of the way

The four ST-4, dynamic and cardioid, hold onto the rim with an adjustable mount: no stands around the toms, nothing under the sticks. Their 50 Hz to 14 kHz response brings out the attack of the snare and the tone of the toms; away from the kit, they work in front of a guitar amp.

Two OH-2 for air and cymbals

The OH-2 form a matched pair of small-diaphragm condensers with a 16 mm diaphragm, reaching up to 18 kHz and handling 135 dB. Above the kit, they capture the shimmer of the cymbals and the space of the room; away from the drums, the pair records a piano or an acoustic guitar in stereo.

The OH-2 are condenser microphones: without phantom power, they stay silent. Turn it on at the mixer or interface for their two inputs (9 to 52 V). The BD-1 and ST-4, being dynamic, do without it.

What exactly does the PreSonus DM-7 kit contain?

Seven mics and their accessories: a BD-1 for the kick drum, four ST-4 for the snare and toms, two OH-2 condensers for the overheads, four rim mounts for the ST-4, two clips and two foam windscreens for the OH-2, and a hard case. No cable is supplied: you need one XLR cable per connected mic.

Does this kit need phantom power?

Yes, for the two OH-2 only: these condenser mics require phantom power of 9 to 52 V, supplied by the mixer or audio interface. The BD-1 and the four ST-4 are dynamic and work without power. You therefore need a mixer or interface able to supply 48 V on at least two inputs.

How many mic inputs are needed to use the whole kit?

Seven XLR inputs to connect all seven mics at once, two of them with phantom power for the OH-2. With four inputs you can already take the kick, the snare and both overheads, then add the toms when the mixer or interface allows it.

Do the ST-4 attach without a mic stand?

Yes: each ST-4 comes with an adjustable mount that clamps onto the drum rim, snare or tom. The mic stays as close as possible to the head without cluttering the drummer with stands. The BD-1 has its integrated mount, to be placed on a mic stand not included, as do the OH-2 with their clips.

Can these mics be used on something other than drums?

Yes: the BD-1 also suits bass amps, the ST-4 guitar amps, and the pair of OH-2 the stereo recording of a piano or an acoustic guitar. The kit thus serves as the basis of a rehearsal studio or a small live sound setup, beyond drums alone.

What is the difference between the dynamic mics and the OH-2 in the kit?

The BD-1 and ST-4 are dynamic: without power, they are made for loud, close sources such as the kick (50 Hz to 15 kHz) or the snare (50 Hz to 14 kHz). The OH-2 are condensers with a 16 mm diaphragm: more sensitive (-38 dB against -55 dB) and more extended in the treble (up to 18 kHz), they capture the shimmer of the cymbals and the air of the room.

Are the two OH-2 a matched pair?

Yes, the two OH-2 form a matched pair, which balances the stereo image when you place them above the kit or in front of a piano. Each comes with its clip and foam windscreen, and requires phantom power of 9 to 52 V supplied by the mixer or interface.
