Frequently asked questions about this product

Why will my PC show less than 512 GB once the SSD is installed?
This is normal: the SSD counts in decimal (1 GB = 1,000 MB), whereas the operating system counts in binary. Multiply the advertised capacity by 0.93 to get the approximate figure displayed, i.e. about 476 GB for this 512 GB model. No space is lost or faulty: only the calculation method differs.
Can I move my Windows installation onto it without reinstalling everything?
Yes: ADATA provides a free migration utility to copy your existing installation to the LEGEND 710, and SSD Toolbox, which then keeps the drive's firmware up to date. Just check that your data fits within the 512 GB of the destination drive.
Will the heatsink fit under my laptop's cover?
With its heatsink, the module measures 80 × 22 × 3.13 mm and weighs 9 g, compared with 2.15 mm thick and 6.2 g without the heatsink. Measure the clearance above the M.2 slot before ordering: in a slim chassis or under a graphics card, a single millimetre makes all the difference. In return, this heatsink lowers the temperature by 15%.
Why doesn't it always reach the advertised 2,400 MB/s?
On the 512 GB version, the maximum speeds are 2,400 MB/s read and 1,600 MB/s write (90,000 and 150,000 IOPS at 4K). But the M.2 slot must actually be wired for PCIe Gen3 x4: in a Gen3 x2 slot, the drive is held back. A nearly full drive, or a different benchmark tool, will also give different figures.
How much data can be written to it before it wears out?
It is rated for 130 TB written (TBW) on the 512 GB version, with an MTBF of 1,500,000 hours. Worth knowing: the warranty ends at whichever of the two limits is reached first, the duration or the volume of data written.
Do I need to install a driver, and what is the minimum Windows version?
No specific driver is needed: the system's standard drivers are enough, and you can also use those supplied by your motherboard manufacturer. However, an M.2 NVMe SSD requires Windows 8.1 or later, with Windows 10 recommended; the Linux distributions Fedora, SUSE, Ubuntu and Red Hat are also supported.
Should it be defragmented, and how can I monitor its health?
Never defragment it: with no mechanical parts, an SSD gains nothing from it and the operation causes needless wear, since it already spreads writes across all its cells. ADATA's free SSD Toolbox reads the S.M.A.R.T. attributes and shows the remaining lifespan, the temperature and the space used.
Can two of them be set up in RAID 0?
Yes, on a compatible motherboard, by connecting two SSDs with the same specifications to the configured port. Be aware, however, that no RAID configuration supports the TRIM command, which improves write performance and extends the drive's lifespan: for an ordinary workstation, a single drive remains the healthier choice.
Is my data protected if the computer is lost or stolen?
The LEGEND 710 supports 256-bit AES encryption. It also features hardware LDPC error correction, which makes data transfers more reliable, while the SLC cache and the Host Memory Buffer (HMB) take care of everyday speed.
Can it withstand shocks and heat in a laptop carried around every day?
Yes: with no moving parts, it withstands shocks of 1500 G for 0.5 ms and operates from 0 to 70 °C, with storage possible from -40 to 85 °C. That is precisely its advantage over a mechanical hard drive in a bag that moves around all day, and its heatsink lowers the temperature by a further 15%.
Which computers can this LEGEND 710 be installed in?
In any M.2 2280 NVMe slot, on recent Intel and AMD platforms, in desktops and laptops alike. The interface is PCIe Gen3 x4 and the standard is NVMe 1.4; “2280” refers to the module's 80 mm length by 22 mm width, a dimension to check on your motherboard.
Is the ADATA LEGEND 710 SSD new and under warranty?
Yes: a new and genuine product, supplied with its invoice, which serves as the warranty document for 1 year. The LEGEND series uses only rigorously tested circuits, and the model carries CE, FCC and RoHS certifications as well as Moroccan type approval. Full details in the ADATA datasheet (PDF).
