Does this 1 TB SSD fit in a laptop's drive bay?
Yes: 2.5-inch form factor, 7 mm thick, weighing 34.4 g at most. It connects via SATA III 6 Gb/s and is plug-and-play on desktop PCs, laptops, NAS devices and the PS4 console. The gain is felt most on a machine still fitted with a spinning hard drive: giving it a second life is what this model aims for.
How much data can be written to it before the memory wears out?
340 TB of cumulative writes for the 1 TB version — 340 complete fills of the drive. Endurance increases with capacity across the series: 170 TB on the 512 GB, 340 TB here, 680 TB on the 2 TB. Reliability is also quantified by an MTBF of 1,500,000 hours.
Why won't my system show exactly 1,000 GB after installation?
Because the advertised capacity is counted in decimal gigabytes (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes) and before formatting. The space actually available therefore varies with the system and the formatting chosen: this is expected and does not indicate any fault in the drive.
What exact speeds can you expect from the 1 TB version of the Wave(S) series?
550 MB/s read and 470 MB/s write sequential, with 75,000 IOPS in both 4K random read and write. These values are specific to the 1 TB: each capacity in the series has its own pair of speeds, and the 560 MB/s advertised for the top of the range belongs to the 1.92 TB version.
Is TRIM supported, and what does it actually do?
TRIM is supported: it is the command by which the system tells the SSD which blocks have been freed, allowing it to maintain its write performance over time. The drive is recognised plug-and-play on Windows, macOS and Linux.
How much power does it draw, and does that affect a laptop's battery life?
2.6 W maximum for the 1 TB version. Power draw follows capacity across the series: 1.3 W on the entry-level models, up to 3.7 W on the 4 TB. It is a very light load, whether for a laptop on battery or a NAS left on permanently.
Is this SSD suitable for a NAS or a media server?
Yes, that is one of its intended uses. The Wave(S) series is tested to the video surveillance server standard for better stability, and has an MTBF of 1,500,000 hours. The dedicated controller and 3D NAND memory are assembled on an automated line.
Why does it withstand shocks better than a conventional hard drive?
Because of its design: no mechanical parts, everything relies on electronic chips driven by the controller. This is the basis for its stated shock-resistant and drop-resistant design, and it keeps data safe from a knock taken by a laptop on the move.
Can it cope with the heat of a poorly ventilated case or a Moroccan summer?
Its operating range is 0 to 70 °C, and it can be stored at -40 to 85 °C. Those 70 °C leave a comfortable margin in a desktop PC case or a NAS. The reference temperature is the one reported by the drive's S.M.A.R.T. data, which can be viewed from the system.
