Frequently asked questions about this product

Are the ports on the Catalyst 2960-24-S Gigabit?
No: all 24 ports are 10/100 Mbps, with no Gigabit port and no fibre slot. It is an access switch for computers, printers and terminals; the uplink therefore shares the same speed as the user outlets.
How many VLANs does this switch support?
Up to 255 VLANs, with the DTP protocol to negotiate links between switches automatically. Rapid spanning tree (RSTP) and multiple spanning tree (MSTP) secure redundant topologies.
What performance does this Catalyst offer?
16 Gbps of switching capacity and 3.6 Mpps on 64-byte packets, with an 8,000-entry MAC address table. It has 64 MB of internal memory and 32 MB of flash memory.
Does the switch protect the network from traffic storms?
Yes, for all three types: broadcast, multicast and unicast. A faulty network card or a temporary loop therefore does not flood every outlet, and IGMP snooping also limits the spread of multicast streams.
How is management access secured?
Through SSH version 2, with RADIUS or TACACS+ authentication, and web access over SSL and HTTPS. Monitoring is handled by SNMP v1, v2c and v3, RMON and Syslog logging.
Does this switch power devices over PoE?
No, none of its ports supplies power. IP cameras, Wi-Fi access points and phones connected to this switch need their own power supply or a PoE injector. Its own power consumption, incidentally, is only 22 W.
How much rack space does this switch take up?
445 × 236 × 44 mm and 3.6 kg: 1U high, 23.6 cm deep, 19-inch rack mounting. It fits in a deep wall-mount cabinet as well as in a standard rack.
Is the switch new and covered by a warranty?
Yes, new equipment, with the invoice serving as the warranty document. It comes with the LAN Lite software image, the entry-level version of the Cisco operating system, which covers Layer 2 switching.
