Is the Patriot P410 single-sided?

Yes, it is a single-sided model. Nothing protrudes on the underside of the board, which opens up the tightest M.2 slots — handheld PCs, mini PCs, thin laptops — where a double-sided module will not fit. It measures 80 × 22 mm, is 3.8 mm thick and weighs 11 g.

What is the P410's graphene heat shield for?

It draws away the heat generated by the Gen4 controller without adding thickness, unlike a metal heatsink. It works hand in hand with thermal throttling, which temporarily lowers the speed if the temperature climbs: the drive slows down for a moment rather than risk overheating.

Does the P410 work with Windows 7 or Windows 8?

Yes: Windows 7, 8.0, 8.1, 10 and 11 are supported. On Windows 7 and 8.0, an NVMe driver may need to be installed before the drive is recognised — worth planning for if you intend to boot straight from it on an older machine.

What speeds does this SSD deliver in its 1 TB version?

5,000 MB/s read and 4,500 MB/s write sequential, in a PCIe Gen4 x4 slot compliant with the NVMe 1.4 standard. That places it in the Gen4 mid-range: well above a Gen3 drive, without the power draw or the heat of the fastest models.

How many terabytes can the 1 TB model write?

320 TB, or 320 complete fills of the drive. This figure is specific to the 1 TB capacity: the higher capacities in the range, which goes up to 4 TB, have a larger allowance. This wear counter can be read in the drive's S.M.A.R.T. attributes.

Does this SSD help preserve a laptop's battery life?

Yes, this is a deliberate focus of its design. Its caching architecture improves write performance while reducing power consumption and the heat released inside the machine, which extends battery life accordingly on a laptop or handheld device.

What do the HMB and SmartECC labels on this drive mean?

HMB, or Host Memory Buffer, means the drive borrows a small portion of the PC's RAM to hold its mapping table, instead of carrying its own cache chip — hence its slim profile. SmartECC, for its part, corrects read errors to preserve the integrity of the data written.
