Frequently asked questions about this product

Why doesn't 3000 VA mean 3000 W of connected equipment?
Because the output power factor is 0.8: the 3000 VA corresponds to 2400 W of usable power. It is this figure in watts that you should compare with the actual consumption of your servers, never the VA. On the input side, the power factor exceeds 0.99.
How long will my servers actually run on battery?
13.5 minutes at half load (1200 W), but only 5 minutes at full load (2400 W). The more you load the UPS, the faster the runtime shrinks: size it for a clean shutdown of the machines, not for continuing to work during the outage.
Can runtime be extended later without replacing the UPS?
Yes. The 9E3000I accepts up to 4 extended battery modules (EBM) for long backup times, as extended runtime is built into this model from the outset. If your needs grow, you add batteries instead of replacing the unit.
Are the batteries replaceable, and do the servers have to be shut down to do it?
They are hot-swappable: they can be changed without powering down the protected equipment. The UPS contains 6 sealed lead-acid 12 V / 9 Ah batteries, with an automatic battery test and deep-discharge protection.
What type of outlets do my devices plug into?
Into 7 IEC outlets: six C13 and one heavy-duty C19 for the most power-hungry device. The input is a C20 inlet, so connection requires IEC cords. The output voltage is 230 V by default (220/230/240 V, ± 2%).
What exactly is in the box?
The UPS, a USB cable, a serial cable, the quick start guide and the safety instructions. Both communication cables are therefore already included to manage the automatic shutdown of a server, with nothing extra to buy: the USB port is HID-compliant and the serial port is RS-232.
Can this UPS be mounted in a 19-inch rack?
It is a standalone tower model, supplied without a rack-mount kit. Plan for space on the floor or on a sturdy shelf, next to the protected equipment: 330 × 399 × 190 mm and 24.4 kg.
Can it be monitored remotely over the network?
Not as it stands: it has no Ethernet interface and the network card is not included. A communication slot lets you add one as an option, at any time. Without it, monitoring goes through the USB port (HID-compliant) or the RS-232 serial port.
Can it shut down virtualised servers cleanly during a long outage?
Yes. The automatic shutdown function is managed with Eaton Intelligent Power Manager (IPM) or Intelligent Power Protector (IPP), and the UPS is compatible with VMware, Hyper-V, Citrix Xen and Red Hat virtualised environments. The two cables required, USB and serial, are included in the box.
Is it suitable for an unstable power grid, with voltage dips and surges?
That is exactly what it is for: with online double conversion, the output is continuously regenerated, with no transfer time. It accepts an input of 176 to 300 V (down to 100 V with derating) and 40 to 70 Hz, and regulates voltage and frequency to deliver 230 V ± 2% as a sine wave.
What happens if the UPS itself fails?
An internal bypass takes over and keeps the equipment powered, including in the event of a downstream short circuit: service continues even if the UPS fails. The LCD screen shows the load, battery level and remaining runtime in real time, so you can diagnose without installing any software.
Is it quiet enough to stay in an occupied office?
Yes: less than 37 dB at 1 metre, which is quiet for an online double-conversion UPS. On the other hand, plan for a second pair of hands at delivery: 24.4 kg in tower format, to be placed on a stable surface.
What is its efficiency, and under what conditions can it operate?
91% in permanent double conversion, and up to 97.5% in eco mode, with a heat dissipation of 737 BTU in online operation. It tolerates 0 to 40 °C, 0 to 95% humidity non-condensing and an altitude of up to 3000 m.
Which standards and certifications does this UPS meet?
It is certified to IEC/EN 62040-1 and IEC/EN 62040-2, and carries the CE, TUV and EAC markings. The output is also guaranteed to be a sine wave, with a maximum distortion of 3% under linear load.
Is the Eaton 9E3000I UPS new and under warranty?
Yes: new and genuine equipment, supplied with its invoice, which serves as the warranty document for the 1-year warranty. Full specifications, including runtime and compliance, are given in the Eaton datasheet (PDF).
