Frequently asked questions about this product

What is the dual-connector port on this 8-port Catalyst 2960?
A port that can be used as Gigabit copper or as SFP fibre, as you choose, but not both at once: it is the uplink. The other eight ports remain 10/100 Mbps for computers and terminals.
How many VLANs does this small switch support?
Up to 255 VLANs, with the DTP protocol to negotiate aggregation links and rapid spanning tree (RSTP) for redundant topologies. An eight-port switch therefore handles the same segmentation as a rack-mount model.
Is this Catalyst IPv6-ready?
Yes, IPv6 is supported, alongside IGMP snooping and DHCP snooping. The latter blocks an address server plugged into an outlet by mistake, a common fault on small networks.
How is management access secured?
Through SSH, with RADIUS or TACACS+ authentication, and web access over SSL and HTTPS. Monitoring is handled by SNMP v1, v2c and v3, RMON groups and Syslog logging.
Does this switch protect against traffic storms?
Yes, for all three types: broadcast, multicast and unicast. On an eight-outlet network, a faulty network card can saturate the whole segment: this safeguard prevents a single computer from bringing down the rest.
What performance does this 8-port Catalyst offer?
16 Gbps of switching capacity and 2.7 Mpps, with an 8,000-entry MAC address table, 64 MB of internal memory and 32 MB of flash memory, for 20 W of power consumption.
How much space does this switch take up?
270 × 163 × 44 mm and 1.4 kg, in a desktop format: it fits in a wiring closet, on a shelf or at the back of a small cabinet, without requiring a 19-inch rack.
Is the switch new and covered by a warranty?
Yes, new equipment, with the invoice serving as the warranty document. It comes with the LAN Base software image, which covers Layer 2 switching, DiffServ and quality of service.
